Foul balls can be huge outs. They can also be some of the most difficult plays to make as a catcher. Perception of a ball hit straight up can be nearly impossible. There are things we can do to increase our chances of catching these tricky freebies.

The usual approach to bunts doesn't work as well when the ball is placed down the third base line. In order to increase efficiency, the right side of the ball should be approached. Make sure to stay in an athletic stance as you pivot to first base for the throw.

Small ball can cause chaos because it speeds the game up and requires precision. Moving quickly and efficiently out of your stance will help you Field bunts and make hard, accurate throws.

Throwing to third requires different footwork than a throw to first or second. There is often a batter standing right in your way, and you have to know how to navigate around her in order to make the best possible throw. You also need to know the rules and understand your responsibilities as well as the batter's responsibilities.

Good throws start from the ground up. Throwdowns are no different. Master the footwork, and you'll be on your way to accurate throws.

Good, quick throws are all about timing. If you want to be quick to get the ball in the air, each step of the throw must be efficient and in sync. Challenge your lower half by developing a lightning-quick transfer.

Knee throws can be a huge asset and tool in your arsenal. They require sound throwing mechanics and advanced arm strength. Because of that, it's best to not rush the skill. Each step of the knee throw has a correlating step in a throw from the feet. Master those skills and they will translate to the knee throw.

A successful throwdown is one of the most satisfying parts of catching. So it's no wonder that it's often a skill that catchers want to work on the most. Practicing throwdowns should be done with intent and not just moving as quickly as possible. The focus should be on efficiency and smooth movements. After all, slow is smooth and smooth is fast.

Blocking is as much a mental exercise as it is a physical one. Learning to turn the thinking off and rely on muscle memory and training is what often stops catchers from effectively blocking. Practice it a lot, and learn to trust your training.

Framing is an art form. Learn it. Practice it. Get good at it.

Catchers catch. Sounds simple, and it is. But it isn't always easy. Catchers catch the ball a little differently than any other fielder. Practicing receiving is essential. Receiving the ball well sets you up for good framing and efficient transfers.

The OKD stance has grown in popularity in the last few years. Opponents will say it's a lazy stance, and there is no doubt that the stance is favored by lazy catchers. But that doesn't mean all catchers who use the stance are lazy. If the temptation to become lazy can be avoided, many benefits can be reaped. It's an active stance. Stay athletic and mobile. Young catchers should get really comfortable catching on their feet before moving on to the OKD stance. Don't forget that the pitchers have to be ready to do their part as well!
