There are three questions I ask of all the competitors I coach after race-day.
1. How did it go?
--> this is your time to share. The Good. The Bad. The Ugly. The Superfabulicious (my word). Express it all. Fears. Battles. Hurdles overcome. All of this gives me insights into you, and what was experienced on race day. 🔹 For many of my seasoned women, I am not present at the race and the data submitted via the SmartWatch only tells some of the story. Your perception completes it. The same is true when I am at the race, actively coaching. I see snapshots of the race course. And you complete the story.
2. What did you learn?
--> Competition is a great teacher. Through the hurdles, bumps, successes, obstacles and failures, we learn. What did you learn in this race? What stood out? What can we build on?
3. What do we need to work on?
--> Taking question #2 a step further, this is the beginning or extension of collaboration. I see the numbers. I can guess what has happened. Unless you articulate, it is just a guess. But when you say..... 'I really need to work on x skill'.... my guess is confirmed or perhaps even proven false. It is you the competitor that needs to have confidence in your ability. This gives me insights. This conversation is much more than I feel slow and want to be fast, or my swim is weak, but it is...... I lose my rhythm and speed when sighting.
This gives me the direction for which to adapt the system. This is powerful.
🔹
Programming then reflects your needs.
I am taking the system and adapting it to you.
The symbiotic relationship continues to evolve.
You trust the process more, because you are contributing to the process, and the coach (me) who is writing the protocol.
Comment and commentaries in your training results also help fuel this. Based on training today, I may adapt your training tomorrow.
The process is only as strong as the feedback expressed. The process becomes individual. For you, with your input.
🔹
Coaching is collaboration.
It is not busy work.
It is the refinement of a system to meet your specific needs.
Carefully designed to bring you success.

Athlete: Can I skip today’s run?
Coach: Of course.
Athlete: What about two days?
Coach: That’s still your choice.
Athlete: A whole week—just because I don’t feel like it?
Coach: No one’s stopping you.
Athlete: Can I train only when I’m in the mood?
Coach: You can.
Athlete: Then what’s the limit?
Coach: Your expectations.
You can’t ask for progress without consistency.
You can’t show up on race day powered by “only when I felt like it.”
Comfort is always available—but it never builds the runner you want to become.
Strength is built on the days you choose effort over excuses.
Every skipped run is a quiet vote for staying exactly where you are.
