Escorting my sista Kimberly Renee to foot surgery today with my man, Podiatrist Dr. Jeffrey Ross. This man saved my toe 25 years ago when as a young trainer, I dropped a 25 pound plate on it off of a leg press machine and fractured the hell out of it. There’s absolutely no way I would have completed my first marathon or would have started coaching runners in 2000 to complete their own marathons without his expertise and awesome bedside manner. I continue to trust him with my fitness clients, runners and my own family. He’s helped more with foot issues than I can count. Let’s GO!

Finally the narrative has shifted from continual intensity and duration of workouts to the importance of recovery from workouts. Recovery is a component of training always and allows your body to bounce back quicker and avoid injuries that put you back on the bench. Work out consistently, throw some hard workouts in there but always budget for some off days or low intensity days.
Fitness culture has shifted to focus on recovery as much as activity, and people are amazed by the benefits
The image of what it means to be fit and healthy is changing, and a new breed of wearable tech places as much emphasis on recovery as activity.

Why am I not too excited about returning to the big box gyms?
I recently joined a new 24 hr in the Heights because they have a sweet basketball court where Max and I could battle it out with a hoops warm up pre weight training workout. But with him being considered higher risk with last year's Crohn's diagnosis and me not too thrilled about spending half of my workout wiping stuff off, even as a fitness trainer, I may be just working out in the studio I train at, at home or outdoors with bands and body weight moves for a while. I hope big gyms rebound but a recent poll showed that about 50% of gym goers are not comfy jumping right back in even as states give gyms the green light to open with a new set of rules.
Smaller gyms and fitness studios who don't pack em in the the gils may have an advantage now. Not saying ditch your 24 and LA fitnesses but maybe ya wanna rethink your fitness regimen with your sights on these smaller fitness centers, yoga studios, martial arts studios who can better control environments between classes, workout sessions etc. Also because honestly, the mom and pop fitness studios and centers normally give you a better experience and a community that is tighter that you can rally around.
Whether they/we like it our not all of us are not in the part time janitorial business now. Sucks but it is the new reality until we learn more, come out of this virus and have a vaccine in the future.

New Chinese Study Shows Minimal Risk Of Coronavirus Exposure Outdoors. This is Promising News For An Outdoor Exerciser and Even More Reason To Walk, Run, Cycle and Workout Outside.
Not too mention those with low vitamin D are more at risk and the best thing you can do for that is go outside and get some sun while you are exercising.
Maybe as a coach I am just way too hopeful and optimistic that we will get through this virus sooner than later but nice to see a recent study out of china show that your risk of contracting the virus outdoors is overwhelmingly low. This study found that out of 1245 confirmed cases across 120 cities, only a single outbreak of 2 cases were identified and related to an outdoor environment. Not a full blown peer reviewed study but it concluded that almost all cases were not transmitted outdoors with almost all coronavirus cases related to sharing indoor space. If you are an outdoor exerciser you should feel a little more at ease with simple distancing from others you run with or next to.
