He began his career in the 1960s and rose to prominence with roles in Bang the Drum Slowly (1973), Mean Streets (1973), and especially The Godfather Part II (1974), which earned him an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. He continued to impress with Taxi Driver (1976), Raging Bull (1980 – Best Actor Oscar), Goodfellas, Casino, Heat, The Irishman (2019), and Killers of the Flower Moon (2023). Beyond acting, he co-founded the Tribeca Film Festival, the global Nobu restaurant chain, and is a vocal advocate for social justice, arts education, and climate action. With over 60 years of dedication, De Niro stands as a living icon of cinematic excellence and civic responsibility.

Taboo Nawasha (Jaime Luis Gomez) was born on July 14, 1975, in Los Angeles. Rising to fame as the dynamic emcee of the Black Eyed Peas, he powered hits like “Where Is the Love?” and “My Humps” on Grammy-winning albums Elephunk and Monkey Business, redefining early-2000s pop and hip-hop.

Beyond the stage, Taboo’s 2016 anthem “Stand Up / Stand N Rock” earned a Native American Music Award for its solidarity with the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe. As an ambassador for health, education, and indigenous rights, he mentors youth and champions cultural preservation—continuing to inspire a new generation of artists.

Chief Dan George (born Geswanouth Slahoot, July 24, 1899 – Tsleil-Waututh Nation, Canada) was a remarkable actor, poet, writer, and spiritual leader of Indigenous heritage.
He rose to fame with his unforgettable role as Old Lodge Skins in Little Big Man (1970), earning him an Oscar nomination – the first ever for an Indigenous Canadian actor.
Beyond the screen, he was a powerful voice for Indigenous rights, tirelessly advocating for cultural preservation, environmental protection, and social justice.
Through his poetry, books, speeches, and community work, he inspired pride, unity, and cultural awareness, empowering future generations of Indigenous youth.
🕊 His legacy lives on – as a timeless symbol of identity, strength, and hope for Indigenous communities and all who value cultural diversity.

The STUNNING ICE JAM at Yankton (Dakota Territory, USA) on March 28, 1881. Huge masses crushed steamboats at their winter anchorage on the Missouri River. The steamer Western quickly sank after suffering a 20-foot gash. Some steamers were flung far up the bank, one landing about 2,200 feet (670 meters) from the river. Piles of ice reached as high as 30+ feet above flood water level. Ice and water swept away most of the town of Vermillion and completely submerged Green Island, Nebraska.

The Helena, pictured, was repaired and returned to service. Note the "Block P" logo between the stacks. The Helena was one of several steamers operated on the Missouri and Yellowstone Rivers by Thomas Power of Helena. In 1890, Power became one of the first two U.S. senators from Montana. He had accumulated a fortune through banking, trtansportation, general stores, and from illegally selling whiskey to American Indians.

Connections to Miles City, Montana, my hometown:
1) The Helena was one of the five steamers used to forcibly relocate Sioux Indians from Fort Keogh to Standing Rock Agency (near Bismarck) in June 1881.
2) The photographer, S.J. Morrow, had briefly served as post photographer at Fort Keogh (near Miles City) before returning to Yankton in 1880. L.A. Huffman, my favorite Old West photographer, bought Morrow's Fort Keogh gallery and obtained several historically important negatives with that purchase.

12-Horsepower Threshing Machine, circa 1910. Dust was everywhere in the L.A. Huffman view. Two men at the top fed the hopper of the threshing machine, which was immediately left of the wagon holding the tied bundles. In the foreground we see the six teams of two horses providing power. The driver at the center might occasionally crack a whip to maintain pace. The heavy metal shaft delivering power to the thresher was partially in view below the men at the hopper. The departing wagon, left, would soon return with more bundles.

The equipment and crew likely traveled from farm to farm in Eastern Montana, saving labor by separating the seed or edible portion of the crop from the husks and straw.
