FOSTER TUSLER On A Hog, 1902. Evelyn Cameron shot the extraordinary portrait in Eastern Montana. The apparently lactating sow was eating from a pan, while accommodating the young lad.

Early cameras required no movement to prevent blur. Photographers absorbed the cost of failed captures, and disliked photographing kids and animals because both moved unpredictably. Cameron was in a low position to obtain a kid-level perspective … rare when bulky cameras used tripods for stability. Cameron obtained a wonderful capture despite some blur from motion.
