🦌 Just a Few Days Until the 2026 Michigan Youth, Liberty & Early Doe Hunts!

With the season just around the corner, I wanted to share a little knowledge about how our hounds actually track deer.

When a deer is wounded, it leaves behind a combination of odors and chemical cues that a tracking dog can use to piece together what happened. Blood, hair, dander, disturbed vegetation, disturbed soil, and other physical evidence can all play a role.

But there is another part of the equation that is often misunderstood — pheromones.

A wounded animal can leave behind chemical information that helps a hound determine that it is following the correct individual and provide’s information about the animal’s condition. Think about the reason a buck makes a scrape. He’s not simply leaving a visual mark. He’s leaving chemical information behind that communicates things like who was there and information about that animal.

Our hounds have an incredible ability to sort through all of these individual pieces of information and put them together. They don’t simply follow a visible blood trail — they’re processing an entire scent picture that we as humans can’t begin to experience the same way.

That’s what makes watching a hound work so incredible. 🐕🦌

Good luck to all the Michigan hunters this weekend! Whether it’s a child’s first deer, a Liberty Hunt buck, or a doe for the freezer, I hope everyone has a safe and successful hunt.

📞 Major Deer Tracking is available 24/7.

And remember — calling doesn’t necessarily mean we have to come out. Sometimes a phone call and talking through the situation can help you make the right decisions before you ever put a dog on the ground.

And this weekend, our tracking services are FREE.

So if you need a hound, don’t hesitate to call.

After all… who doesn’t love watching a bloodhound work? 🐾

Good luck, stay safe, and enjoy the hunt!

This weekend can mean something different to every hunter. For some, it may be the first deer their son or daughter has ever had the opportunity to harvest. For a Liberty Hunt participant, it may be a long-awaited chance to get a deer in the freezer. For others, it may simply be an opportunity to put some venison on the table and make a few memories in the woods.

Whatever your reason for being out there, we hope you have an incredible weekend.

Hunt hard. Hunt safe. Enjoy the time in the woods. Take a kid hunting. Make some memories. And if things don't go exactly as planned and you need a little help finding that deer, don't hesitate to call us.

At Major Deer Tracking, we believe every deer deserves a dedicated effort and every hunter deserves the opportunity to find closure to their hunt.

As we gear up for the 2026 deer season and work our way through the new regulations, I find myself looking back on the journey that brought us here.

I started tracking deer in 2022, and honestly, we knew very little back then. Since that time, we've grown tremendously through the guidance of fellow trackers, tracking events, real-world experience, and countless hours in the field in the off season.

The things these hounds have shown me they are capable of continue to amaze me. I couldn't be more proud of the team we've become and the bond of trust we've built together. Our hounds come from Ron Slifer of Illinois, home of the "Rockstar Hounds," and their pedigree speaks for itself. In just two seasons, Zirc has helped recover 54 animals for hunters, while Raven added 7 recoveries in her first season.

Most importantly, I'm grateful to every hunter who has entrusted us to help when things didn't go as planned. Your trust during some of the most stressful moments of a hunt is something I never take for granted. Every call, every track, and every recovery is an opportunity to do what we love while helping fellow hunters achieve closure.

Our job begins when your trail goes cold.

The torch is lit, the fire is burning, and we're ready to kick off the 2026 season in just a few short weeks.

Good luck this season to all Hunters and Tracking teams.

Fun morning with John Stewart over at The NEXT STEP Deer Tracking & Recovery running tracks.
John laid Raven a 816 yard track that had a little bit of everything. Thermals, wind, dry ground that was rained on heavy after the line was laid, multiple terrain changes. Overall Raven did well. Then John ran patsy on the same line to get her use to running after other dogs. This is a key element to train the dogs for, we often times can use a more experienced hound for back up if we need extra verification. No time in the woods behind a dog is ever wasted. Always fun. Thanks again John.
