Tell Me About It Tuesday!

Did you know we have barn cats at CSE? 👀 Did you also know that said barn cats are probably the N O S E I E S T barn cats ever?!

If they know you, you better believe they want to know EVERYTHING you’re doing. What are you carrying? Where are you going? What are you working on? Can they supervise? 👀 They are basically the unofficial CSE management team.

Of course, their “stranger danger” is STRONG. They’re much more likely to disappear faster than you can say “kitty!” if they don’t know you. But once you’re part of the crew? Congratulations—you’ve been approved for barn cat inspection!

So, yes
we have horses, but they aren’t the only four-legged employees keeping an eye on things around here

đŸŒ” How about a little Throwback Thursday with the CSE crew?!đŸŒ”

We had to dig DEEP into the archives for this one, but we found it! Here’s a little glimpse into one of Sydney’s first-ever barrel races back in 2010 with the mean mustang pony, Cher.

Yes, that Cher. The same little mare who eventually became a huge part of the reason Cactus Spur Equine was created in the first place
 but a mean mustang pony nonetheless.

My favorite part of this video isn’t just getting to watch little baby Syd and Cher ‘running’ barrels (although that is pretty darn cute đŸ„č). It’s getting to hear the voice of the man who played such a huge role in helping create the person I am today — Rick.

Rick ran, and still runs to this day, an absolutely amazing horse program in Arizona. I spent my summers and after-school hours at their house, learning, riding, working with horses, and soaking up every bit of knowledge I could. Even now, whenever we’re back in Arizona, we make a point to go visit them.

It’s crazy to look back and realize just how much the people and experiences we encounter throughout our lives can shape who we become. Sometimes you don’t realize how important those connections are until you look back years later and see just how many pieces of your life trace back to them.

For CSE, I can trace those roots back to Rick
 and one mean little mustang pony named Cher. So here’s to the beginnings, the people who helped shape us, the horses who started it all, and remembering where we came from. These are the roots where Cactus Spur Equine was formed.đŸŒ”đŸŽ

📣Tell Me About it Tuesday📣

Do you ever wonder why we strongly recommend wearing long pants when working with or riding horses?

Well
 THIS is what you’ll look like if you choose to ride ba****ck in shorts, even for a short spur of the moment ride😅🙈

Between the dirt, dust, grass, horse hair, and everything else that comes along with hanging out with horses, Syd’s legs were looking pretty, um, nasty. And don’t worry, the fronts of her legs were just as gross from brushing, picking hooves, and all the other horsey activities!

Moral of the story: shorts + horses = not the best combination = try at your own risk = not advised.

Save yourself the scrubbing later and wear the long pants! Trust us, your legs will thank you, not only for being clean but also protecting against the bugs!

Storm Prep at CSE — What does it look like?

As most of you know, Iowa weather can be, well
 interesting and unpredictable to say the least!

Although we always pray for the best, we prepare for the worst. Our storm prep looks a little different depending on the season, but there’s one thing that’s always for sure: the horses get a tag put in!

These bright-colored tags have:
✍The horse’s name
✍The owner’s name
✍The owner’s phone number

Why? Because if a fence gets ripped out of the ground, blown over, or something falls on it and the horses get out, we want to give them the best chance of being identified and getting back home. If they don’t find their way back on their own, we hope these tags can help someone get in contact with us!

How does it work? It’s super simple:

1ïžâƒŁ Write your information on the tag.
2ïžâƒŁ Tie a piece of string or twine through the hole and make a loop.
3ïžâƒŁ Take one section of your horse’s braid and put it through the loop.
4ïžâƒŁ Braid like normal!

And there you have it!

Although we hope to never, ever have to rely on these, it gives us a little bit of peace of mind knowing that if the worst did happen, our horses have an extra form of identification with them.

Storm prep isn’t always glamorous, but when it comes to our horses, we’d rather be overprepared than wish we had done more.

SUNDAY SILLIES AT CSE!

Today’s Sunday Silly is brought to you by a photoshoot blooper
 and we remember exactly what was happening behind the camera for this one. 😅

Let’s set the scene:

We had put the boys back in their pen because they were officially DONE with their pictures. We brought Oakie back over to get some individual shots
 and apparently, the boys were NOT okay with being left out of the action.

Cue the running.
Cue the kicking.
Cue the boys pretending to be NFR bucking horses in their pen.đŸ€Šâ€â™€ïž

Our lovely “outside oven” weather is really not giving fall vibes, that’s for sure! The boys were soaked in sweat again today, so we let them hang out in the shade and cool down while we worked on chores around the farm.

We also took advantage of the opportunity to have them w**d eat the round pen
 because why hurt your back pulling them out when they’ll happily do it for you?đŸ€Ł And of course, the boys had to get a couple of good rolls in the nice sand while we were at it to scratch those sweaty itches!

Shade, fresh water, a little w**d eating, and some good ol’ fashioned dirt baths, just another afternoon at CSE! đŸŒ”đŸŽ

A Day in the Life at CSE! đŸŒ”đŸŽ

Enjoy this little day in the life clip of my assistant and I cleaning Oakie’s inside pen during chores!

This was over the weekend when we actually had the energy to have fun working
 Fast forward to today
 and let’s just say we are not nearly as energetic in the outdoor oven Mother Nature has created for us. đŸ„”

We’re sweating just standing still, so anything requiring actual movement is feeling a little *melty* right now!😅

What’s the point of working out when you’re sweating just standing outside?! This heat has us feeling like we’re standing in an oven! đŸ„”

Don’t worry, they each have their own fan that they’ve been parked in front of them all day, but when it feels like 8,000 degrees outside, even the fans can only do so much! They each also got double electrolytes with dinner tonight, along with plenty of fresh, cold water to help them stay hydrated and comfortable!

Now if only we could turn the thermostat down on this giant outdoor oven
