Urgent Prayer Request: Our beloved Pastor Tony Winterowd has suffered a massive heart attack and is fighting for his life. We ask you to stop what you are doing and drop to your knees. We serve a God of miracles! Let us cry out to Him together. If you are local, join us in front of the church at 7:30pm tonight (8/17) to join hands outside and pray. I encourage you to read this blog post from Tony written just two days ago, and listen to his charge:
“Do we believe that God can work similar miracles in our and other people’s lives? Do we truly believe? Or, do we surrender to what appears to be the inevitable? If you know of a marriage that is struggling, pray. If a loved one is seriously ill, pray. If finances are stretched, pray. If ministries are struggling, pray. If hearts are hardened toward Jesus, pray. Pray. Pray. Pray. Jeremiah 32:27 encourages us: “I am the Lord, the God of all mankind, Is anything too difficult for me?”
Keep the faith,
Pastor Tony

****UPDATE Saturday, 8/17, 9:45pm****
*Prayer is still fervently needed! Pastor Tony is in critical condition. He had the most severe kind of heart attack possible. God has already shown His miracles by having Tony at the ER when this massive attack occurred! His heart stopped (Code Blue) for 15 min in Hanford. Once airlifted to Fresno, he went immediately into surgery - his left anterior descending artery was 100% occluded. All things considered, the surgery went well. He will stay intubated and sedated for at least 24 hrs. He needs continued prayers. The next 24-72 hours are critical! It is truly a miracle Tony is still alive. To God be the glory!*
****UPDATE Sunday, 8/18, 10:00am****
*From Sheri Winterowd: Things are a little better-he's stable right now. He hasn't needed any medication adjustments for the last 2 hrs. In the night they were doing a dance to keep his blood pressure where it should be, so the fact that he hasn't needed any adjustments for 2 hrs is big improvement. Still sedated and intubated. Keep praying.*
****UPDATE Sunday, 8/18, 7:15pm****
*Prayers still fervently needed! The good news first: Pastor Tony has gone 6 hrs without needing adjustments to his blood pressure meds; they see no blockage/occlusion to his heart; no EKG changes; kidney function is normal. Praise the Lord! His heart muscle is very weak, and he still has a pump that's circulating the blood for him. URGENT PRAYER REQUEST: the most concerning news is the loss of blood from his lungs via the chest tubes. He's received 7 units of blood so far. It's taxing on the body to process so much blood, and he's at risk for anemia. The MD says he's still very tenuous and the next 24 hrs are critical. CALL TO ACTION: Central Valley residents donating any type of blood in Tony's name would be very helpful and it would give him "credit" for the blood. For those who are able, please donate at any Central Valley Blood Bank. Please pray specifically for Pastor Tony to remain stable and wisdom for his medical team.*
****UPDATE Monday, 8/19, 8am****
*Tony is doing better! The rotary pump they had put in to help his heart pump blood dislodged yesterday and was not working at all. The doctors did a procedure to reinsert it last night. Now it is working well! Praise God! The night nurse was able to get him off of 3 of the heart medicines and he is only on one now. Amazing! The bleeding/drainage from his chest tubes is lessening. Those tubes will stay in as long as he is on the ventilator. He will still be sedated for at least the next 24 hours to let the pump do its job. Keep praying!*
****UPDATE, Monday, 8/19, 3:30pm****
*Pastor Tony is stable right now! Praise the Lord! This is what we have prayed for!!! He's had no setbacks so far today, and he is doing better than this morning. Things are heading in the right direction! Thank you all for your love and support. The Winterowd Family is strengthened by your prayers and love!*
****UPDATE, Tuesday, 8/20, 12:05am****
*Tony’s blood pressure & heart rate are still stable. Late Monday he was weaned off the blood pressure medicine entirely. His numbers look good! The nurse dialed back the sedation and asked him to wiggle his toes & do other little things and he did! Praise the Lord! But that made his blood pressure go up, so his sedation was increased for him to rest his heart. Still going in the right direction! We are so grateful for the Lord’s mercy and your continual prayers!*
****UPDATE, Tuesday, 8/20, 11am****
*Pastor Tony is still sedated to keep him comfortable and to keep him from moving (which dislodges the rotary pump). He is still able to be off the Blood pressure regulating medicine - amazing news! Today, they are dialing back the rotary pump to let his heart do the work circulating blood. Every two hours they will dial it back to see if he can tolerate it with the goal of removing it today if possible. He’s on the right path toward healing! Thank you all for the prayers, please keep lifting them up!*
****UPDATE, Tuesday, 8/20, 5pm****
*Pastor Tony is doing well; still going in the right direction - hallelujah! He has been tolerating the rotary pump being dialed back. His blood pressure & cardiac output are good. The doctors are getting ready to remove the rotary pump and line this evening - Please lift up prayers for this procedure! Thank you!*
****UPDATE, Tuesday, 8/20, 9:45pm****
*Praise the Lord, the procedure went well! The pump is out and they were able to take him off blood thinners. Tomorrow they will start the process of waking him up, depending on what his body can tolerate. Please continue to pray!!*
****UPDATE, Wednesday, 8/21, 10:30am****
*Pastor Tony is still sedated and on meds to keep his heart less irritated. He will have a CT of his chest today to see about removing the chest tubes. After the CT, they plan to remove some sedation so they can check his neurological function. Thank you to so many who have given blood!! Please keep lifting him up in prayer!!*
****UPDATE, Wednesday, 8/21, 9:15pm****
*Pastor Tony had a procedure this evening to put a central line in his neck to his heart. Praise the Lord - it went well! He is now able to sit up, which will help clear his lungs. The CT scan is complete, but results will not be available until tomorrow. He is more lightly sedated, but unfortunately his body is not tolerating it well. His blood pressure goes too high when he is off sedation. We are waiting now to find out if he needs more medicine for his blood pressure or if he will be more heavily sedated. Please continue to pray!*
****UPDATE, Thursday, 8/22, 3:45pm****
*From Sheri Winterowd: Today we have met with the neurology, cardiology and pulmonary teams (a total of 6 docs). The CT scan showed a blockage in Tony's brain, possibly an ischemic stroke. He has fluid in his lungs, below the current chest tubes, his heart is functioning at 35-40%. In short he is very sick. The pulmonologist is currently performing a procedure to aspirate the fluid in his left lung with an intent to check for blood. If it is blood they will insert a second chest tube in the lower left lung. His sedation medications have been changed because he was not tolerating when they lessened sedation (his heart rate & B/P went too high). He briefly woke up under the new medication and opened his eyes and responded to Brooke and me talking to him. He could only tolerate that for a short time. He is still on the ventilator. The cardiologist said it's "hour-by-hour" with his condition. Very serious. Thank you for your faithfulness in prayer. God is faithful.*
****UPDATE, Thursday, 8/22, 10:40pm****
*The fluid in Pastor Tony's lung was blood; the pulmonologist placed a second chest tube in the lower part of the lung (where the first chest tube could not reach). At that point almost a liter of blood came out. He is breathing better now (still on the ventilator). He was off sedation for 4-5 hours this evening and was responding to questions for little things like wiggling his toes and blinking, but he has yet to move his arms. He is back on the full sedation now. Thank you for your prayers and support. Let’s keep on praying for miracles.*
****UPDATE, Friday, 8/23, 9:50am****
*This afternoon at approximately 2pm, local pastors will be in Fresno to pray over Pastor Tony. We believe in the power of prayer. We believe God calls us to cry out to Him. We believe in miracles. And most importantly, we believe that He is good all the time. God can. Even if He doesn’t; we sing His praises! But until He tells us ‘no’, we will plead for a ‘yes’!! Please set your alarms for 2pm today and join us in prayer to our Lord Most High!*
****UPDATE, Friday, 8/23, 3:30pm****
*From Sheri: I got here at the hospital around 9:45 am. Four friends came and we prayed and sang around his bed. He opened his eyes and he smiled at me. Earlier today, he gave the nurse a thumbs up. Then around 2:15pm, I had a good time of prayer with 4 pastors. Very encouraging. Tony is eliminating a lot of fluid so that is good. One clarification: when I told you that his heart function was at 35%, I should have said that 50-55% is normal. It can improve from 35%, over time as he gets better. And by God's grace, he is getting better!!!*
****UPDATE, Friday, 8/23, 5pm****
*Pastor Tony has an infection in his lungs which is being treated by antibiotics and he has a fever. Thank you for your faithfulness in prayer.*
****UPDATE, Friday, 8/23, 10:45pm****
*Pastor Tony was a little more awake and breathing fast this evening, so his sedation was increased. Even in sedation, he lightly squeezed the nurse’s hand with each of his hands when she asked him to. The antibiotics he is on are specifically targeted for the bacteria in his lungs; there has been an improvement in his white blood count since yesterday, so it seems to indicate that they are helping with the infection.*
****UPDATE, Saturday, 8/24, 3:30pm****
*Pastor Tony had a repeat CT of his head. This is to assess the infarct in his brain. Praise the Lord there is no further damage and it is remaining the same. He has too much fluid in his lungs so they are upping the medicine to him get rid of the excess fluid. There is concern for his kidneys- please pray that they can tolerate the extra load. He has 5-6 lbs if extra fluid they want to come off. They are going to turn down the settings on the ventilator for several hours today to see how Tony does. Prayers for that to go well.*
****UPDATE, Saturday, 8/24, 6:30pm****
*From Sheri: Tonight, the pulmonology team is planning to test whether they can remove Tony's chest tubes by removing the suction feature and seeing if he can tolerate it. Please pray for strength in his lungs. If the chest tubes can be removed, that is a positive step on the road to getting Tony off the ventilator.*
****UPDATE, Sunday, 8/25, 9:50am****
*From Sheri: I talked to the nurse this morning and he was able to tolerate the chest tube being clamped off. The X-ray has not been read professionally by radiologist, but the nurse said he did not see anything that would prevent the removal of the chest tube. That’s the next step to get him closer to having the ventilator removed. Yesterday he was trying (unsuccessfully) to talk to me around the ventilator tube in his mouth. It must be so frustrating for him. Geoff, Tony’s brother is here again this weekend. He is at the hospital now and I will go up after church. Thank you for continuing in prayer on this journey with us. God is faithful and God is good.*
****UPDATE, Sunday, 8/25, 3:45pm****
*From Sheri: Tony has had a setback. He has a high fever and the infection in his lungs seems worse or he’s had a bad reaction to medicine. He can’t tolerate stimulation so he is being kept more sedated and the nurse is keeping him asleep more. When he does wake up, his heart rate goes way too high. I am told this is a normal part of the healing process. “Three steps forward & 2 steps back”. Pray for his body to fight this infection and for him to keep healing. The chest tubes will stay in at this point.*
****UPDATE, Sunday, 8/25, 10:45pm****
*From Sheri: No change. Tony still has a high fever, they are still using ice packs and Tylenol to fight the fever and are still keeping him sedated. He was started on new antibiotics this morning at 8 am. Nurse said it takes 12-48 hours for them them to work. Keep praying please.*
****UPDATE, Monday, 8/26, 12:30pm****
*From Sheri: Praise the Lord. Tony is doing better today!!!!!! At 4 am his fever came down some and he opened his eyes and has been responsive today. Opening his eyes, giving thumbs up and wiggling his toes (responding to commands). He keeps mouthing around the ventilator “water” asking for moisture in his mouth. He does have an acute infection, most likely in his lungs and has been started on new antibiotics (broad spectrum) to fight it until the culture shows the specific bacteria, at which time they will target it with a specific antibiotic specifically for that bacteria. The ICU team has ordered a standing bed to help with his lungs and strength. Perhaps by the end of today he would have that standing bed and start the process of getting him toward standing up. He will need prayer for the ability to tolerate it. And continued prayer for the infection to heal. His ventilator settings have had to be turned up because of the infection. They need to be turned down before he can be weaned off the vent. We had a beautiful time of healing prayer and scripture reading this morning around Tony’s bed with Pastor Andrew and his wife Kerry Cromwell and Pastor Alan Reutter. I’m feeling encouraged and hopeful.*
****UPDATE, Monday, 8/26, 1:45pm****
*The high fever and high heart rate came back. Pastor Tony is now on a cooling machine to try and get the fever down.*
****UPDATE, Monday, 8/26, 9:15pm****
*From Sheri: Tony’s fever went down this afternoon, then back up again this evening. He was very responsive all day today, using his eyes & eyebrows, smiling, and using facial expressions to communicate around the ventilator. He will squeeze my hand and follow directions that the nurse gives. He has his sense of humor. He keeps mouthing “water” and we were able to swab his mouth with ice water every 15 minutes and he likes to chew on the swab. Keep praying for his infection to clear. It looks like pneumonia, but the cultures are still growing, so they are not sure yet. Please pray that he is able to get moved to the standing bed with no problems tonight. Thank you! God hears and God heals!!!*
****UPDATE, Tuesday, 8/27, 12pm****
*Pastor Tony was successfully moved to the stand up bed and is currently at a 45 degree angle and is tolerating it pretty well. Physical therapy is coming today to assess him and give exercises for the nurses to do with him. He still has the fever. It comes down some with Tylenol, but it is still a concern. Thank you for your continued prayers*
****UPDATE, Tuesday, 8/27, 3:45pm****
*From Sheri: His white blood count is still way too high. The ICU team has recommended a bronchoscopy to take a camera down and clean his lungs out really well to help with healing the pneumonia. They also want to ultrasound his groin for possible infection there. They hope to remove the central line from his heart and the right chest tube as those are areas for possible infection. He is struggling with a great deal of anxiety (which is normal when you feel like you have a garden hose down your throat), but the anxiety really stalls his healing and he has had to go to much higher settings on the ventilator. The hope of getting him in the standing bed has had to be postponed until his anxiety can be addressed. 😩. Please, please pray for his lung infection to heal and for the bronchoscopy to go well. And the source of infection to be found. Please pray for the Lord to ease his anxiety (he's on medicine for all this too).*
****UPDATE, Wednesday, 8/28, 1:30pm****
*From Sheri: Update from ICU. This is Tony’s 11th day on the ventilator. We got results back from the ultrasound of the groin. Tony has a pseudo-aneurysm (venous blood, not arterial blood, which is good because it’s easier to stop) internally bleeding in his groin at the site where the line was that was used to place the stents & the heart pump on 8/17. The team of doctors has decided to do a procedure in the next little bit to try and stop blood.
The bronchoscopy that was done yesterday was successful and the doctors were able to get thick gunk out if his left lung especially, which was causing problems with his breathing. His white blood count came down a little bit but is still very high. We are getting wonderful care here at CRMC. Please pray with continued earnestness for Tony’s healing. WE NEED HEALING!*
****UPDATE, Wednesday, 8/28, 6:30pm****
*Thank you for your prayers - Pastor Tony’s pseudo aneurysm is not visible and hopefully has resolved. Praise the Lord! Continued prayers are needed - his white blood cell count has gone back up. The doctor has ordered an upper body CT scan tonight to check for an abscess. Let us pray specifically that this infection can be found and healed*
**** UPDATE: Thursday, 8/29, 10am****
*From Sheri: Good morning from ICU! Today I got a ride to the hospital with Bryce - he dropped me off on his way to school. Tony is doing pretty well right now (relatively) and the physical therapist is in his room right now attempting to have him start using the stand up bed for the first time!!!!! Please pray he can tolerate it!!!*
****UPDATE: Thursday, 8/29, 7:30pm****
*From Sheri: Tony was able to do two of his 20 minute stand up bed sessions so far today and one more will happen this evening. He gets really tired out, so right now he’s napping, holding my hand. His white blood count came down today, yay! The respiratory therapist did a test today, turning the ventilator settings down to see if Tony could tolerate it. He couldn’t, so he will try again tomorrow. Please pray he does well on that tomorrow. The upper body CT scan showed no signs of infection, yay! The left chest tube was removed today as well. Please keep praying!!! He has not been sleeping well at night, so please pray for that as well. Thank you!*
****UPDATE: Friday, 8/30, 1:30pm****
*From Sheri: Tony did not sleep at all last night😩. He did get his PT this morning and he did ok. He will have his next breathing test (where they turn the settings down on the ventilator to see if they can tolerate it) at 2 pm.*
****UPDATE: Friday, 8/30, 3:45pm****
*From Sheri: Well, unfortunately he couldn’t tolerate the breathing test. His heart rate went dangerously low. Twice. He's not ready to get off the vent yet because he has too much fluid on his lungs. His electrolytes are not balanced. His sodium is too high. He's actually dehydrated 😞. So they are starting a diuretic push. He will continue PT. Dr. is starting heparin to address the ischemic stroke. They will watch him closely to make sure his brain doesn't bleed.*
****UPDATE: Saturday, 8/31, 3:30pm****
*From Sheri- Some good news today: Tony slept well last night. The new medication seems to be easing his anxiety and he is more restful and relaxed. He did get a 10 minute PT session in the standing bed this morning. We have decided to wait on the Heparin for now as the potential risks outweigh the potential benefits. We are now considering a tracheotomy as that could be more beneficial for getting him off the ventilator.*
****UPDATE: Saturday, 8/31, 6:45pm****
*From Sheri: The Dr showed us the lung CT scans from 8/21 & 8/29 sire by side and there is as a great difference between the two. Improvement!*
****UPDATE: Saturday, 8/31, 9pm****
*From Sheri: I asked the nurse to turn Tony's sedation down & sit him up. He has his glasses on & is watching the USC vs. Fresno State football game. The boys drove down to the coliseum and are using the tickets in Tony's honor.*
****UPDATE: Saturday, 8/31, 10:45pm****
*Please join us in immediate prayer! An echocardiogram from this evening showed a large clot in Tony's ventricle. Tony has started Heparin, but there is a risk of a brain bleed. Please pray immediately for no bleeding problems and for the Heparin to work to break up the clot! Thank you!*
****UPDATE: Sunday, 9/1, 3:30pm****
*From Sheri: Hello from ICU. Tony just finished his second physical therapy session on the standing bed. He's resting now. His first breathing trial this morning was not successful and showed that he is still not ready to come off the ventilator. The nurse is doing frequent labs to assess his body's tolerance for the heparin and other drugs.*
****UPDATE: Monday, 9/2, 2:30pm****
*From Sheri: I’m here at the hospital and just got an answer about the tracheotomy. It will not happen until tomorrow afternoon. In the meantime they are keeping him more sedated as he is very upset about the ventilator tube going down his throat. This is day 17 on the vent and he seems frustrated and weary. Please pray for his comfort and peace in this waiting time. The Dr. told me that the Heparin will be turned off 6 hours prior to and following the surgery to place the trach.*
**** UPDATE: Please pray immediately! Tuesday, 9/3, 11:30am****
*Pastor Tony is undergoing a tracheotomy procedure right now. Please be in prayer that all goes well, especially as he is a risk for bleeding due to the blood thinning medicine he is taking. We trust the Lord and His faithfulness to carry Tony through this stressful time.*
**** UPDATE: Tuesday, 9/3, 12:50pm****
*PRAISE REPORT! Pastor Tony’s tracheotomy procedure was successful with no complications! Hallelujah!!*
****UPDATE: Tuesday, 9/3, 8pm****
*From Sheri: Here’s some helpful info from my dear friend Sara, a speech pathologist, to help us understand the benefits of a trach: The trach will be much more comfortable than being intubated because nothing will be in his mouth. Eventually when deemed safe by a Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP), he'll be able to eat/drink with the trach and vent. Also, with the use of a 1-way valve put into the vent tubing (usually a coordinated effort with SLP and Respiratory Therapy), he'll be able to talk. This will also transition him off the vent more gradually. When he no longer needs the trach, the small hole in his throat will quickly close back up. Thank you all for praying! Currently, Tony is still very sleepy from the surgery.*
****UPDATE: Wednesday, 9/4, 10am****
*URGENT PRAYER NEEDED! From Sheri: Tony and I had a beautiful time together at the hospital late last evening. He was alert and responsive, we held hands and I sang to him and he was very peaceful. I just just got a call from the hospital and things have taken a bad turn for Tony. His kidneys are failing and his liver enzymes are too high. He is confused. His blood pressure is too low. They are going to put in a central line, a dialysis line and an arterial line to treat him. Doctor thinks it’s an infection. They did a ultrasound last night of his abdomen and are waiting results. He has tenderness when you touch his belly. WE NEED GOD'S HEALING TOUCH!! Please pray!!!! There are risks to these lines being placed. Pray for no problems and pray that the medication and dialysis works. The doctor and I both think he can still make a full recovery. To God be all glory.*
****UPDATE: Wednesday, 9/4, 3:15pm****
*From Sheri: The lines are all in Tony’s body and they went in well with no complications. His dialysis has started (the dialysis will not necessarily be permanent...his kidneys should be able to make a full recovery if all goes well). The next 24 hours are critical for him. Thank you for praying. PLEASE KEEP IT UP!! I’ll update more after I speak to his Doctor.*
****UPDATE: Wednesday, 9/4, 5:30pm****
*From Sheri: I spoke with the Dr. and she said her hypothesis is that the Lipitor (statin) that Tony was given following the heart attack has caused rhabdomyalosis, a condition that causes your muscles to break down. He went into shock and that's why his kidneys and liver, etc. have been needing support. The doctors have already done everything- dialysis, medicines, etc. It's just time now. Over the next 24 hours, prayerfully, his body should turn it around. (For clarity: They stopped the Lipitor. It's like he's had an allergic reaction to it)*
****UPDATE: Thursday, 9/5, 2pm****
Quick update: Pastor Tony is doing well today. Organs still improving; things seem to be heading the right direction. Please continue praying.
****UPDATE: Thursday, 9/5, 6pm****
From Sheri: Just got the report back from the most recent labs. The numbers are consistently looking good/going in the right direction!!! Thank you Lord! He's very tender - the muscles breaking down are apparently sensitive to the touch.
**** UPDATE: Friday, 9/6, 2pm****
*From Sheri: Praise the Lord Tony is doing better today. He is responsive, able to communicate by his facial expressions, hand gestures and we can read his lips. He is still uncomfortable and in pain. He is a fighter, though!!! One great thing: he was able to breathe on his own (called a Spontaneous Breathing Trial or SBT-where they turn the settings way down) for nearly two hours! Yay! His diaphragm has not been worked these last 3 weeks on the ventilator, so this is a good step to get those muscles working again. He is on antibiotics, though it’s unclear exactly where any infection might be. He is still on dialysis and it’s working well to clean his blood. Please also specifically pray for his feet. They are purple because the blood has been diverted to sustain his organs (vasopressin). Also the dialysis line is very finicky & keeps alarming.*
****UPDATE: Saturday, 9/7, 2pm****
*From Sheri: Thank you all for prayers!!! Tony is doing pretty well today. He seems more tired. He had was only able to tolerate an hour on the trach collar this morning (I mistakenly called it a cuff yesterday, it’s when he is taken off the vent). His blood pressure went too high and his breathing was too fast. His labs show that his body is recovering well from the rhabdomyalosis. His kidneys still have not recovered and he remains on dialysis. I heard from the Dr. last night that he does have an active staph infection in his lung(s). They are treating it with targeted antibiotics for a longer course than last time. Please continue in prayer for his body to fight the infection and his mind & body to be able to tolerate being weaned off the vent. God is faithful!*
****UPDATE: Sunday, 9/8, 6pm****
*From Sheri: Tony is still doing okay. He has not had any new "setbacks". He has not made much new progress. His heart is still recovering so he gets really tired. He didn't sleep well last night. His feet & hands are looking better! He seems discouraged and weary. He remains on dialysis. Thank you for your faithfulness in prayer. The nurse just told me we have to go at his pace. He's had a lot to deal with physically.*
**** UPDATE: Monday, 9/9, 10am****
*From Sheri: I came early today to be here for Doctors rounds. He slept okay last night. I slept well. Please specifically pray for his feelings of discouragement. He is on a SBT (spontaneous breathing trial) and he keeps mouthing “I can’t do this”. The nurse told me that the pain medication gives him brain fog & short term memory loss. He’s really struggling. On the good side, he is supposed to get PT & OT today. His fine motor skills are not good. He was trying to write with a pencil & clipboard when I came in and he couldn’t. 😢This is apparently "normal" for what he has been through.*
*Thank you, Lord, for gathering your children to pray on behalf of this servant. We thank you for blessing us tremendously through him, and ask that you leave him here with us. Hear our prayers, oh gracious God!
