All our lives, we have been told that if we work hard, we will become successful. Then, once we become successful, we will finally be happy! In other words, success first, happiness second. BUT, recent research has flipped this notion around and has proven that in order to achieve true “success”, we must be happy first...

For many of us, overwork is a normal part of life. Our culture applauds the value of achieving, producing, and doing. We rush from one activity to the next and if we have a brief pause in between, our instinct is to fill it with something productive. Otherwise, we feel guilty or shameful. In this world-view, relaxation is a treat, a rare gift we give ourselves. For many of us, this hectic lifestyle influences our well-being and happiness. When we can find a healthy equilibrium between work and play, we allow ourselves to discover a deeper sense of fulfillment and happiness. But How?! Click the link in the bio to find out!

Last week, I had the privilege to meet Lisa Wilson (on the left). As we got to know each other, Lisa opened up and told me her mom has Stage 4 Lung Cancer. Lisa stated “I would never wish this journey on anyone, but could not be more grateful for the time it is giving me with Mom. Before she was sick, it was so easy to let days go by and not connect and now I am doing so much better at being in the moment and with her as much as I can. The hair shaving, while another sad reminder of her current journey, is also another opportunity to make a memory.”

Growing up, I worried about every little thing under the sun. I worried if I’d be able to sleep, if I’d be able to pass my math test and if I’d be accepted in grade school. As I grew up, these worries only intensified. I started worrying about where I would go to college, if I’d still be able to play football, and if I’d ever find the woman of my dreams. Fast forward to present day, and I still worry! I worry about sleeping through my 4:45am alarm every morning, about not meeting client expectations, and about not being able to accomplish everything I set out to achieve in this lifetime. Fortunately, mindfulness and meditation practices are extremely effective in alleviating anxiety and have provided myself and millions of others with long-lasting relief from worry and anxiety.

Peace requires forgiveness. No matter what has been done or said that pains you or the people you love, forgiveness MUST be generated. I once heard somebody say that holding onto resentment is like drinking poison and waiting for the other person to die. Resentment serves no purpose and literally speeds up the aging process as it shortens one’s own life span! Recently, I was let down by a once, very close friend. After a bit of self-reflection, I realized that the betrayal I experienced had nothing to do with me and everything to do with this other human being. The actions this individual committed imply that he is a sad and depressed soul who is in need of love, healing and kindness. While I do not condone his actions or agree with his reckless behavior, I DO forgive him.

Experiencing stress within your comfort zone can help you stay focused, energetic, and able to meet new challenges in the workplace. Stress is what keeps you on your toes during a presentation and alert to help prevent accidents or costly mistakes at work. However, when stress exceeds your comfort zone, it stops being helpful and can start causing major damage to your mind and body as well as your job satisfaction.

I once heard somebody say that holding onto resentment is like drinking poison and hoping it will kill the other person. Holding onto a grudge does not make us strong; it makes us bitter and contributes to increased stress, anxiety, and a shorter life span! We forgive so that we can release the resentment and anger that builds up within ourselves. Those who forgive enjoy better physical health and suffer less from anxiety and depression!

I once heard somebody say that fear acts as a compass pointing us in the direction we should be headed. Rather than letting fear throw us off our game, we can utilize fear to learn more about ourselves. This allows us to grow out of bad habits, poor judgments, and questionable decisions. Always remember, we don’t overcome the fear then move forward. We move forward to overcome the fear. Click the link in the bio to read more!

“You cannot always control what goes on outside. But you can always control what goes on inside.” – Wayne Dyer
🔑
We are GUARANTEED to face adversity in our lives on a daily basis! Rather than resisting, we must learn to let go and accept! When we shift our focus from everything that is going wrong in a given moment to everything that is going right, we re-wire our minds to search for the positive, the joy, the good in every moment. The more frequent we practice, the stronger our minds become. So when you are hit with a little bit of adversity today (and you will be!), pause and identify 3 things in your life at that very moment that are going right! Remember, the keyto happiness is the decision to be happy!
🔑
I will end on this quote: “The art of living lies less in eliminating our troubles than in growing with them.”

Adversity is the foundation of success! It doesn’t matter if you are trying to win a client bid, your weekend basketball match or a huge stuffed animal at the carnival; the reason success feels SO good is because there is always an opportunity for failure. The more likely you are to fail, the greater the success feels! It is the yin and the yang of life. If there was no such thing as failure, success wouldn’t feel as good once we achieved our goal. Failure IS what makes life so interesting, so rich, so exciting! “Adversity is the foundation of success!” So the next time you don’t succeed, get excited! EMBRACE IT! Learn from it! Our greatest lessons are not rooted in stories of success, rather they are learned through brutal, raw, tangible failure!
