Chicago 1959!
During the 1959 Pan American Games, water polo matches were staged in the diving well of Portage Park, transformed for the occasion into a full international competition venue. Temporary goals, referee platforms, and packed grandstands turned the public pool into one of the most atmospheric settings of the Games. The Chicago tournament brought together five national and regional teams—the United States, Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, and the West Indies Federation—each fielding a complete roster that shaped a memorable edition of Pan American water polo.
The United States squad featured Frank F. Connor, Ronald E. Crawford, Donald J. Good, Andrew F. Haberman, Kenneth Hahn, Edward Jaworski, Arthur Koblitz, Sam G. Kooistra, William A. Kooistra, and Ronald D. Severa. Brazil was represented by Everardo Alvares, Paulo Bruzzi, Luiz Daniel, Hilton de Almeida, João Gonçalves, Adhemar Grijo, Marvio Kelly, Sylvio Kelly, Flavio Ribeiro, and Rodney Stuart.
Argentina’s roster included Alfredo Carnovali, Osvaldo Codaro, Pedro Consuegra, Eugenio Crnkovich, Roberto L. Fischer, Eduardo Goyri, Jorge E. Lucey, Ernesto A. Parga, Ignacio Tandeciarz, and Diego Wolff.
Mexico competed with Guillermo Avelar, Luis Bacmeister, Miguel Cornejo, Carlos Flores, René Figueroa, José Guzmán, José Olguín, Otilio Olguín, Héctor Pita, and Juan Salles, while the West Indies Federation listed Lloyd Agard, John Burke, Michael Fennell, Geoffrey Foster, Cedric Nash, Gary Nash, Charles Packer, Donald Rodriguez, Terrance Samuels, and Albert Weatherhead.
The photograph from Portage Park captures the intensity and popularity of the sport in Chicago in 1959: spectators packed the stands on all sides, and the elevated diving tower doubled as an observation and officiating platform above the action. Competing on home soil in this dramatic setting, the United States men’s team completed an undefeated campaign and finished first in the final standings.
