For the last day of Indianapolis Rugby Month, I had a hard time trying to figure out how to wrap things up. I have been a member of this club for 17 years, serving as President for many of those. I started the plan for Indy Rugby History Month right after our 2023 Midwest win thanks to a recommendation from Zach Douglas.

Over the last month, I have learned much about the team I have spent almost half of my life with and I am grateful for the old boys who have helped by providing stories, pictures and memories to share.

As I look forward to 2024, I am more optimistic than I have ever been about the sport of rugby in Indiana. I just attended an extremely uplifting Youth Rugby Summit hosted by Rugby Indiana. Varsity college programs are starting to sprout up in Indianapolis like Marian University and in just the past few years, we have had an USA Eagle Captain & Olympian both come from the Indianapolis youth rugby community.

For the Impalas, I am excited to go to USA Rugby Nationals with a group of teammates who have never been there before including several who have dedicated a decade plus to this club. I am excited about the future of this team with the next generation of guys on the team putting in work to be the best they can be and ensuring it won't be another 15 years until we make our next trip to nationals.

Lastly, I am thankful to my wonderful wife Jen, my children (Summer & Amelia), and the rest of my extended family who have allowed me to spend as much time as I have with rugby and knowing very well that I plan to continue to spend many more years devoted to this sport and team.

If any of the stories over the past month have made you smile, brought forth a forgotten memory, or just taught you something, please consider donating to the next chapter of our history if you haven't done so already - https://tinyurl.com/ImpalasNationals

Another man we'd like to recognize during this week is best known as "Big Daddy." This kind-hearted jovial man has graciously organized the Boxing Day social for several years after it became too big for Simon's basement. We thank Biggins' for his contributions to Boxing Day and rugby in general in the state of Indiana.

Boxing Day is a day that is appreciated by young and old and has served as an unofficial rugby reunion for anyone who has been around rugby in the state of Indiana. Pictured is Dave Toth calling for a try to be awarded in 2014.

Another long time Boxing Day & Indianapolis Rugby presence is Denny Connor. Denny has been a tremendous coach, player, and mentor to many people in the Indianapolis Rugby community and still finds ways to support the team to this day. We can't thank Denny enough for his years of service and support to the club.

A Boxing Day tradition that only lasted a couple years was players wearing old Halloween costumes for the match. On one memorable Boxing Day in 2009, spectators were treated with a unique spectacle as Ronald McDonald (Patrick Sells) found himself running towards The Burger King (Marcus Collins?).

All of the other competitors stopped for a moment to allow this one on one face off to occur without any outside interference which resulted in roar of cheers and laughter.

Besides being the man who started Boxing Day, Simon Bidmead has been a tremendous presence in the Indianapolis Rugby community helping a variety of high school programs with scrummaging or personally hosting people at his house on Boxing Day for years. We can't thank Simon enough for his contributions to the Indianapolis rugby community.

While not an official Indianapolis Rugby Club event, Boxing Day has become a staple of rugby in Indianapolis. In 1991, Indianapolis Rugby old boy Simon Bidmead brought an English tradition to Indianapolis with the first Boxing Day match. This pickup game is always played on December 26 (no matter how bad the weather) and has been an annual tradition (other than COVID) for 30+ years now.

In 2018, the Indy Impalas 2nd side secured their first ever D4 Championship with a combination of young, upcoming players and seasoned Old Boys. A couple of the Old Boys who had last played on the 2009 Nationals team turned back time and ensured championship weekend was full of .

In 2009 the Indy Impalas finished 3rd in the USA Rugby Nationals in Glendale, Colorado. Bolstered by new or returning impact players like Scott Peterson & Donny Younger, this Indy Impalas team only lost 1 game against eventual champion East Palo Alto in the Semi-Finals. In the team photo, you will notice the continued support of Old Boys like Tom Verplank, Dave Toth, and George Lewis. Fun fact: The only remaining active player from the 2009 Nationals team is Evan Roberts who appeared in 9 out of the 10 Impalas games this Fall.

2004: The Indy Impalas finish 4th at USA Rugby Nationals. Exactly 20 years before our current team goes to nationals, the Indy Impalas rugby team went to the USA Rugby 15s Nationals for the first time (as the Impalas). The team actually lost in the Round of 8 in Rhode Island, but later found out on the Monday afterwards that their opponent had played an ineligible player. The team was asked if they could get to Pittsburgh for the Final Four in just a few days and they did. Ultimately the Impalas would finish 4th overall.

The Irish Fest Rugby Tournament: The Indianapolis Rugby Club won several Irish Fest Tournaments in Indianapolis. The tournament would be towards the start of every fall rugby season and take place during the Indianapolis Irish Festival and would often be played on IUPUI's campus or at Lake Sullivan. Unfortunately as the fall rugby season crept earlier and earlier in the year, the feasibility of the Irish Fest Tournament no longer made sense. A little over a decade later in 2023, the Indianapolis Irish Fest as a whole ended after 30 years due in part to the pandemic.

In a bit of recent history that even surprised our President, here is the story of how the Indy Impalas logo came to be (From Peter Dinwiddie via Troy Spring):

I (Pete) worked with an Indianapolis ad agency to create the name and logo. At the end of the day, the rugby group (Mike Burke, Larry Gilbert, Denny, Verp) signed off on the nickname as a way to brand and market the club.

In 1995, the Indianapolis Rugby Club traveled to San Francisco to play in the Golden Gate Rugby Tournament. The team finished as the runner-ups to the host team. On a fun note, a couple years ago (2018-ish) one of our former players reached out to President, Evan Roberts with a picture of an Indianapolis Rugby Club plaque that still sat in the San Fransisco Golden Gate rugby clubhouse.

The New Zealand All Blacks rugby team has 15 Principles, one of which is to "Be a Good Ancestor" (Plant trees you'll never see). In the early 1990s, the Indianapolis Rugby Club embraced this mentality by partnering with the Indiana Rugby Union to start the Indiana Youth Rugby Foundation that would go on to be Rugby Indiana. 18 of the 23 players on the Impalas 2023 Championship game day roster played youth rugby thanks to the Indiana Youth Rugby Foundation / Rugby Indiana. It is thanks to amazing ancestors like David Toth, Larry Gilbert, Peter Dinwiddie (pictured) and many others that we have the rugby community that we do today in Indiana. In continuing with this tradition, several members of the current Impalas team have served or are currently serving as youth rugby coaches in Indiana.

We are sad to inform the Indianapolis Rugby community that Richard Boswell passed away this Thursday. He was a fixture in the backline during the 80's on some very competitive teams. "Boz" was a great talent and teammate, admired by all those he played with.

His daughter, Jessica Ridenour, is asking the Rugby community for any pictures of Boz in action, to include in his memorial video.
