Important Information Regarding Presidential Modification General Rule 1101.10 Horse Identification Number and Horse Identification Form
(Microchip Requirement)

Note: It is important that you check breed or discipline rules for microchip requirements as those rules and requirements remain in effect.

The safety and welfare of our horses is a top priority for USEF. The presence of contagious viruses in the equine population poses a significant health risk to our horses and a significant sustainability risk for our sport.
With the implementation of the new rule requiring all horses competing at USEF licensed competitions to have a microchip, several breeds and disciplines have asked to delay the implementation date to further assess the benefits of a microchip requirement.

The new effective date of the rule is December 1, 2026. We applaud those members who have taken the initiative to microchip their horses as they are contributing to ensuring an environment in which disease outbreaks can be managed responsibly. See the note above for more information on microchip
