Cycling seems to help reduce dementia
How Your Legs Produce The Medicine Your Brain Needs To Fight Dementia | The Cycling Week
New research confirms that cycling does more than burn fat; it releases a powerful hormone called irisin that crosses the blood-brain barrier to grow new neurons and protect against dementia.

Trail closure
The City of Newport has alerted us that there will be closures of the Regional Parks Connector Bikeway (AKA San Diego Creek & Mountains to the Sea) where it passes under Jamboree right at the top of Upper Newport Bay.
"The work and trail closure will begin Monday of next week and continue through Thursday (October 11-14). A detour will be in place to connect trail users with the San Diego Creek and Back Bay Drive trails."
The detour will be similar to when it was closed here by OC Parks in 2019.

Looks like Laguna Canyon Rd will be open next week. A rider reported that the Southbound was already cleared.
Caltrans reported today (October 4) that the last concrete K-Rail barrier has been removed from the Laguna Canyon Class III bikeway. This has been on-going since August LAST year (2020) - We would love to get a confirmation from anyone riding between Lake Forest and El Toro that the shoulder is free of obstructions and can be ridden again!

A few of you have asked about the gate blocking the underpass on Peter's Canyon Trail at the train tracks. Here are the details and who to complain to. A 70 year old woman crashed on the detour on Sunday. Pretty big cracks in the asphalt.

OCTA & Orange County Parks are supposed be taking the lead on getting that underpass legally opened.

Not the illegal segment anymore
Los Patrones Parkway & the Right to Bicycle (See update below)
Between Oso and Cow Camp, Los Patrones Road was designed to be an extension of the toll road into San Clemente. The plan was scrapped - yet the road along the east side of Rancho Mission Viejo and Ladera Ranch still has freeway signs prohibiting pedestrians and cyclists. We heard rumors of cyclists being cited for riding on the road because of those signs. We thought this was just an oversight to remove the toll road freeway signs.
OCBC pointed this out to the County and are surprised that they won't take down the signs (or improve the shoulder crossing on and off ramps at Chiquita Canyon as we suggested) They say "biking on the roadway shoulder should not be permitted due to safety concerns" despite acknowledging our right to travel on public roads - including freeways when no alternate is available. This is a 'slippery slope' when a local public agency decides to keep us from our use of a public road.
OCBC wants to hear from or about anyone who was indeed cited, or who has ridden between Oso and Cow Camp on the road, (not just the shared use side-path between Oso and Chiquita Canyon). We are seeking cyclists who are willing to be included in a possible claim against the county for infringing our access to the roads we helped pay for.
UPDATE - OCBC success: On April 1st the County reconsidered and reversed their decision, agreeing to remove the signs:
"Upon further review and internal discussion, Traffic Engineering have agreed to remove the existing R5-10a signs on Los Patrones Parkway. A work order will be issued to our Operations and Maintenance Division for implementation. Please allow between 6-8 weeks for the work to be completed.
Please feel free to submit any future request through https://myoceservices.ocgov.com/ServiceRequest should you have other concerns or complaints.
Thank you,
Denise Esguerra
Civil Engineer Assistant, Traffic Investigations"
We have subsequently asked them to alert the CHP &/or Sherrif to stop any citations until the signs come down...

After 2.5 months of effort with CalTrans, the Orange County Bicycle Coalition has got a date out of Caltrans Orange County District 12 to fix the rumble strips on PCH in HB.
The week of 2/15/21 is when they said they will move the rumble strips out of the bike line. They also said they will clean the bike lane to make it safer to ride in. I would avoid the area until the rumble strips are moved.

Please chime in and make sure to mention Caltrans Orange County District 12.
