Chef .capella of treated us to an epic finale dinner with his wild turkey to close out the first season of Hunter’s Harvest! The creativity and daring he displayed was something else, y’all. I mean, who makes sausage with a turkey head?? He used just about every part of the animal, and it all tasted fantastic. Can’t wait to get this stuff edited and shared with the world!

Every time I post about this issue, I hear from folks who’ve had it happen to them or someone they know. Is that you? Always pay attention to what you’re putting on the fire, folks!

It was fun seeing these bear cubs play on the tree while we were out turkey hunting this morning! We never saw mama, but we weren’t trying to FA&FO. Must be a big girl to have triplets like this!

This is the edible mushroom that I most frequently leave behind rather than harvest, but not because they aren’t tasty! It’s just common to find tiny amounts of it that don’t amount to enough for the taking. Have you ever seen it before?

My wonderful wife saw Vinca in landscaping around our neighborhood and commented on how lovely it looked, but I had to shoot it down. Her visual taste is unmatched, but she didn’t know how invasive it is. Please plant native things in your landscaping, people!! This stuff is in a State Forest near a homesite where the buildings have long since disappeared, and yet it is still here preventing biodiversity from returning to its part of the forest.

We had a heck of a morning, today!

What a morning!! After zero gobbles yesterday, I was afraid that the 24 degree morning would be a bust, but the birds were on fire. A group of gobblers were hammering away from the roost onwards. While we were set up hoping they’d come back our way, I heard a lone gobble way up on the ridge top. Game on! He came in on a string, snuck in behind us but gave himself away by breaking a twig, then strutted into a gap for a shot. Best of all, he had a unique color that was really special. I think he might qualify as leucistic, but he also could have come from a hen that interbred with a tame tom. Everything about his feathers was different from usual in a beautiful way. Capping the experience, we held our position to avoid disturbing the opportunity for the other hunters on this public land to get a chance at the still hammering group of birds nearby, which led to another hunter harvesting his first ever bird. We said hi and celebrated together before making the hike out. 🦃🦃
