Your support team: Why asking for help can be the bravest and smartest thing you can do There is an undeniable part of human nature that makes us feel like we must tackle big challenges by ourselves. Why are we often hesitant to reach out for help when we are struggling the most?

You can hear part 2 of Arthur Mannix's fascinating series on the history of skiing at https://ktna.org/2021/02/susitna-writers-voice-february-14-2021-sliding-through-the-centuries-a-glimpse-into-the-origins-evolution-of-skiing-from-the-neolithic-to-the-new-millennium-pt-2-by-arthur-mannix/
Juneau Nordic Ski Team updated their information in their About section.
You may not have yet had the pleasure of meeting Talkeetna legend Arthur Mannix on the trail or listening to one of his dramatic readings or stories around a fire having grown up skiing in Juneau. Hopefully someday you will get the chance to race the Oosik classic, the Southecentral Alaska version of the Buckwheat classic and then maybe you will get to know this great storyteller and ski enthusiast for yourself. He was in fact coach Mo's coach in Jr. Nordic way back when and continues to inspire her to this day. Listen in to the first part of an entertaining series he wrote and recorded on the history of nordic skiing and stay tuned for more!

Way to go Wayne!
Yesterday was a big day for Juneau Nordic Ski Club, and we went along for the ride! With recent snowfall and consistent temperatures, Pioneer Road could finally be groomed for Nordic skiing.
At the end of North Douglas Highway, this wide gravel road is long, sunny, and full of rolling hills. Wayne, one of the groomers for the club, let Carolyn tag along to see what the process was like. See our stories for more!

Applications are open for JIRP 2021!
Prospective students, field staff, town staff, teaching faculty, and research faculty are invited to apply for JIRP 2021 at juneauicefield.org. JIRP is an eight-week summer field program. Our expedition of 30 students (mostly undergraduates), 15 staff, and 30 faculty does a six-week ski traverse of the Juneau Icefield in Southeast Alaska and northern British Columbia.
Students: We welcome applicants who have never been hiking as well as from seasoned ski mountaineers. We built our academic curriculum to meet a wide range of students where they are. Lectures begin with the basics ("what is a glacier?"), and quickly progress onto to supporting cutting edge research teams with real-life data collection efforts.
Staff: We seek applicants with experience and interest in teaching glacier safety, managing remote field camps of 40-60 people, mentoring students, and providing logistical support to research teams either in the field or in town. Above and beyond any specific skills, we value a team-oriented mindset and a motivation to foster an emotionally and intellectually supportive learning environment in physically demanding circumstances.
Teaching faculty: We seek PhD students, postdocs, professors, researchers, and professionals to lead lectures, workshops, and field trips. We make use of our tremendous natural classroom to teach, train, and inspire our students for future careers in academic Earth and climate science, science communication and education, and as field technicians and support.
Research faculty: We seek researchers looking to collect data and test equipment in an accessible glacial environment with infrastructure support. We provide safety staff, deep local knowledge, permanent and temporary field camps, snow machines, generators, etc. In exchange, you give two lectures and involve our students in research where possible.
JIRP is a collaborative endeavor. We support learning and cooperation. Grad students, early career researchers, and students without previous field experience are encouraged to apply.

A Big thank you to Eaglecrest Ski Area
for the skiing during our team retreat this weekend and Juneau Nordic Ski Club groomer Peter! We had a blast skiing in the fresh snow and classic track at the upper loop! We're looking forward to seeing you on the upper and lower loops this season at Eaglecrest!
Are you having trouble making your skate skis work? Do your ankles and shins feel unnaturally sore? How you use your feet in skate skiing is super important. Don't unweight your feet like you do in walking and running, rolling your weight through the ball of the foot. That will just make the ski tip dive into the snow. Instead, push to the side, off the inner edge of the foot.
As you become more skilled, you can work to bring your weight more forward and push off more towards the front of the foot. But the push is always in the sideways direction. Not backwards!
Another great opportunity!
