The folks over at AIPAC are likely having major conniptions today after Trump’s much-hyped multi-billion-dollar weapons sale to Israel just hit a major roadblock.
Senator Jeanne Shaheen and Congressman Gregory Meeks, the top Democrats overseeing foreign relations in both the Senate and House, are jointly blocking the massive $2.8 billion weapons sale to Israel, and the details make clear exactly why.
The package includes 40,000 one-ton bombs, mu*****ns so devastating that even the Biden administration withheld them from Israel, citing their role in the indiscriminate destruction that's contributed to a staggering civilian death toll in Gaza. An estimated 70,000 Palestinians have been killed over the course of the war, according to Palestinian health officials, a figure that doesn't even distinguish between combatants and civilians.
Shaheen, who chairs Senate oversight of these sales, placed her hold back in July. Meeks made the rare decision to publicly confirm his own hold this week, citing concerns about whether Netanyahu's government would actually use American weapons in compliance with international humanitarian law and U.S. law, a legitimate legal standard, not a partisan talking point.
Shaheen didn't mince words explaining her position: "Netanyahu needs to hear from America that we don't like what he's doing. We don't like what's happening in the West Bank where settler violence is killing Palestinians, sending them out of their homes, disrupting basic infrastructure. And the Netanyahu administration has basically done nothing to address that."
Let's be clear about what's actually happening here. This isn't reflexive anti-Israel sentiment. This is two senior American lawmakers, using their legitimate statutory oversight authority, drawing a line specifically because Netanyahu's government has shown zero meaningful response to documented, escalating concerns: mass civilian casualties in Gaza, bombing campaigns in Syria, and violent settler attacks displacing Palestinians in the West Bank, with basic infrastructure destroyed in the process.
This is what accountability is actually supposed to look like: providing military support to an ally shouldn't be an unconditional blank check, regardless of how that support gets used or who ends up paying the human cost.
When even the weapons the Biden administration wouldn't send are back on the table, and Democratic oversight leaders in both chambers are stepping in simultaneously, that's not obstruction. That's Congress doing exactly the job it's supposed to do.
