Working hard or barely working… we like to help horses feel better and have fun while we do it.

More importantly, if your horse is feeling tight, tired, or more resistance than usual. It’s time to book your next bodywork appointment.

Muscle Monday: Re**us Capitis Ventralis

This small muscle sits underneath the poll, connecting the first cervical vertebra to the base of the skull. Its primary job is to flex and stabilize the head at the poll while supporting the small postural adjustments a horse makes during movement.

When a horse is not using the area normally, an owner may notice a fixed head carriage, inconsistent contact, difficulty flexing at the poll or a tendency to carry the head unevenly.

Breaking Barriers offers professional equine bodywork and FES in Kalispell and Bozeman. Send us a message to schedule with a qualified bodyworker.

Welcome to Muscle Monday a weekly look at the muscles that influence how your horse moves, performs and feels. Each Monday, we’ll break down one muscle, what it does and some of the signs that may indicate it is tight, overworked or compensating.

Today we’re covering the brachiocephalicus, a large muscle running along each side of the neck. It helps bring the forelimb forward and assists with moving and bending the head and neck. When it isn’t functioning comfortably, you may notice reduced forelimb reach, uneven muscle development, difficulty bending in one direction or tension through the lower neck.

These signs don’t always mean the muscle itself is the source of the problem. It may be working harder to compensate for discomfort or weakness elsewhere in the body which is why looking at the whole horse matters.

Noticing changes in your horse’s movement, flexibility or muscle development? Breaking Barriers offers equine sports massage and FES sessions in Kalispell and Bozeman. Send us a message to schedule with a Breaking Barriers bodyworker.

Had a great FES session with Biscuit! Biscuit enjoyed every minute of his session. The first time I worked on him he was tense and tight through his neck and back.
