Last night we said goodbye to Pete. After 5 dedicated years and the achievement of Brown Belt, Pete has to leave us for his new job on the east coast. We said goodbye the usual TKM way with a punch to the stomach (21 people). You will be missed.

RIP.
As a child growing up in the 70's and 80's, he was one of the most influencial American martial artists on the screen. I remember going to the drive inn to see a double feature of "A Force of One" and "The Octagon". And I waited for 3 hours to get to meet him once at a comic-con. His presence and influence will be missed among the martial arts community, but will live on in his movies and Chuck Norris jokes that have helped make him legendary.

Intense hostage situation. Lessons that can be learned...
#1: The suspect felt that just holding the knife was all he had to do, so he didn't even have a tight grip on it.
#2: The knife was his "power" and when he lost it, he immediately fought to get it back. This is also happens with fi****ms, so the idea of disarming and the person just gives up immediately is a fallacy promoted by movies and television that many Krav systems train to rely on.
#3: The man who volunteered to replace the woman as hostage and disarmed the knife is an F-ing HERO! Huge props!

Why learn unarmed gun defenses? This video is one reason.
This could have gone so badly. Fortunately, if you slow the video down, you can see that the suspect didn't have a round in the chamber and had to rack the slide which allowed a chance for the unarmed officer to intervene.
n case you're wondering why Krav Maga always uses strikes as a part of our defenses, you can see how effective the knee to the face was to help "subdue" the suspect.
