The 2022–23 Kelso Hilanders were a team whose overall record didn't completely tell the story.

Kelso finished 13–10, but when it came to the games that mattered most in the 3A Greater St. Helens League, the Hilanders were one of the best teams in the league.

Under longtime head coach Joe Kinch, Kelso went 7–1 in league play, tied Mountain View atop the standings and forced a special tiebreaker game to determine the league's No. 1 and No. 2 postseason seeds.

Along the way came a 104-point double-overtime shootout, a 38-point blowout of Capital, a 38-point league victory over Heritage, an impressive late-season turnaround against Mountain View and another trip into the District 3/4 postseason.

🏀 LEAGUE PLAY BEGINS WITH A WIN

Kelso opened the season December 2 at home against Prairie.

The Hilanders immediately put a league victory in the win column.

Three days later came a difficult 70–50 loss to Tumwater, but Kelso responded with a quality road victory over Emerald Ridge.

After a loss to Rogers of Puyallup, the Hilanders returned home and defeated Black Hills 58–44.

Kelso was 3–2 heading into one of the games that would ultimately determine its league championship hopes.

⚔️ ROUND ONE — MOUNTAIN VIEW

On December 15, Kelso traveled to face Mountain View.

The Thunder handed the Hilanders their first—and ultimately only—loss of the official league schedule.

That result would loom large for more than a month.

Kelso wouldn't get its rematch until January 30.

🔥 85 POINTS AGAINST CAPITAL

Kelso bounced back in a big way.

The Hilanders exploded offensively in a 38-point victory.

Then came a trip to the SunDome.

Kelso defeated Ellensburg 58–44 before dropping the second game to West Valley-Yakima, 61–41.

The calendar turned to 2023 with Kelso still very much in contention.

🏆 THE HILANDERS TAKE CONTROL IN LEAGUE PLAY

Once January arrived, Kelso began stacking GSHL victories.

After a non-league loss to Skyview came the second meeting with Prairie.

This time Kelso was on the road.

It didn't matter.

⚔️ A TOUGH NON-LEAGUE STRETCH

One of the reasons Kelso's 13–10 overall record doesn't tell the complete story was the difficulty of its non-league schedule.

The Hilanders faced programs including:

Then came one of the wildest games of the entire season.

January 24, 2023.

Battle Ground at Kelso.

Regulation wasn't enough.

One overtime wasn't enough.

By the time it was over, the two teams had combined for 198 points.

It was Kelso's highest-scoring game of the season and the Hilanders' only trip into triple digits.

Three nights later came a completely different kind of battle.

Kelso traveled across the river to face neighboring Mark Morris.

This time, one point separated the teams.

From a 198-point double-overtime shootout against Battle Ground to a one-point game against Mark Morris just three days later, Kelso was playing some of its most dramatic basketball of the season.

And next came the game the Hilanders had been waiting for.

🔥 REVENGE AGAINST MOUNTAIN VIEW

Kelso's only league loss had come at Mountain View.

The first meeting:

Six weeks later, Mountain View came to Kelso.

The result was dramatically different.

Kelso didn't simply even the season series.

The Hilanders won by 19 points.

From an 11-point loss to a 19-point victory, Kelso produced a 30-point turnaround between the two meetings.

And suddenly the race for the top of the GSHL was wide open.

Kelso closed league play with two more victories.

A 38-point victory.

Then:

The Hilanders had completed their league schedule at:

Mountain View also finished 7–1.

That meant the league championship race required one more game.

⚔️ ROUND THREE — FOR THE TOP SEED

Kelso and Mountain View met for a third time on February 6 at Skyview High School.

The first two meetings couldn't have been more different.

Now came the rubber match.

This one was much closer.

Mountain View claimed the tiebreaker and the league's top postseason position.

Kelso entered the District 3/4 Tournament with no margin for error.

The first opponent was Yelm.

The Hilanders responded with one of their biggest offensive performances of the season.

The victory moved the Hilanders into another loser-out contest against North Thurston.

This time, the season came to an end.

🏆 THE LEGACY OF THE 2022–23 HILANDERS

The final record says 13–10.

The league record tells another story.

7–1.

Kelso was extremely difficult to beat when the 3A Greater St. Helens League championship was on the line.

The Hilanders swept Prairie.

They swept Heritage.

They swept Evergreen.

And after losing their first meeting with Mountain View by 11 points, they came back and defeated the Thunder by 19.

That forced a third meeting to decide the league's top postseason position.

There were memorable games beyond the league race.

A 104–94 double-overtime victory over Battle Ground.

A 63–62 battle with Mark Morris.

An 88–79 loser-out district victory over Yelm.

And a season that remained alive until February 15.

The 2022–23 Hilanders combined a six-man senior class with a group of underclassmen that included 6'6" junior Payton Stewart and gave Kelso a roster built around size, experience and depth.

They didn't make the state tournament.

But for eight games during the official GSHL schedule, almost nobody could solve them.

Seven wins. One loss.

And when the regular-season league race was finished, Kelso was tied at the top.

The final record doesn't tell the entire story of the 2025–26 Kelso Hilanders.
Kelso finished 10–12 overall, but the Hilanders played an ambitious schedule that included 4A opponents, three games in Idaho, a trip to the Moda Center, a rivalry game at Lower Columbia College and a challenging Greater St. Helens 3A slate.
Along the way, head coach Joe Kinch's team knocked off Union, beat Battle Ground at the Moda Center, edged W.F. West by a point and finished the regular season with consecutive 18- and 20-point league victories.
Kelso then extended its season with a convincing loser-out victory over Shelton in the District 4 3A Tournament.

Kelso opened the season at home against Ridgefield and immediately found itself in a competitive game.
The Hilanders came away with a 62–57 victory.
Four nights later came a familiar opponent from across the Cowlitz River.
Kelso vs. Mark Morris.
The Hilanders delivered one of their strongest defensive performances of the season.

Kelso was 2–0.

✈️ THE IDAHO TRIP
Kelso's early schedule quickly became more demanding.
After a 66–52 road loss to Skyview, the Hilanders traveled to Boise for three games against Idaho competition on three consecutive days.
Kelso opened the trip with a narrow 62–58 loss to Blackfoot.
The Hilanders responded the following day.

The trip concluded with a 77–42 loss to Cole Valley Christian, which went on to finish 18–4.
Kelso returned home having tested itself against three unfamiliar opponents far from Southwest Washington.

🔥 A BIG WIN OVER UNION
Waiting for Kelso back home was 4A Union.
The Hilanders responded with one of their best victories of the season.

Kelso followed with a loss to Camas before getting an opportunity to play on an NBA floor.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
🏟️ A WIN AT THE MODA CENTER
On December 27, Kelso faced Battle Ground at the Moda Center in Portland.
The Hilanders made the opportunity count.

It was a memorable setting and another victory over a larger-school opponent.
Kelso entered January at 5–4.

⚔️ TWO POINTS FROM TUMWATER
Kelso opened 2026 with one of its toughest road tests of the season.
The Hilanders traveled to face Tumwater, a team that would eventually finish 24–4, go undefeated in the Evergreen 2A and place at the State 2A Tournament.
Kelso nearly knocked them off.

Two points separated the teams.
For Kelso, the result was also an indication that the Hilanders could compete with some of the stronger teams on their schedule.

🏀 GREATER ST. HELENS 3A PLAY
League play brought another difficult stretch.
Kelso opened against Prairie and fell 81–66.
Then came Mountain View.
That one needed overtime.

Another two-point loss.
Later, Kelso traveled to Evergreen and came within a single point:

Through its first three league games, Kelso was 0–3.
But two of those losses had come by a combined three points.
The Hilanders needed to find a way to turn close losses into wins.

🏀 ONE POINT AT LOWER COLUMBIA COLLEGE
In the middle of the league schedule came a January 19 matchup with W.F. West at Lower Columbia College.
It became another possession-by-possession battle.
This time, Kelso finished on the right side of it.

After losing games by one and two points earlier in the month, the Hilanders secured a one-point victory of their own.

🔥 THE HILANDERS RESPOND
Kelso earned its first league victory on January 27 with a 69–59 win over Heritage.
Prairie and Mountain View handed the Hilanders two more losses, leaving Kelso with work to do as the regular season wound down.
Then the Hilanders produced their strongest two-game stretch of league play.
First came a rematch with Evergreen.
The first meeting had ended:
Evergreen 62, Kelso 61.
The second wasn't nearly as close.

An 18-point victory.
Two nights later, Kelso traveled to Heritage.

There was no margin for error.
Kelso opened the District 4 Tournament at home against Shelton in a loser-out game.

Lose and the season was over.
The Hilanders delivered.

A 22-point postseason victory pushed Kelso's record to 10–11 and kept the season alive.
Two nights later came Prairie.
Kelso had already faced the Falcons twice during the league season, and Prairie proved to be a difficult matchup again.

🏆 THE 2025–26 KELSO HILANDERS
A 10–12 record can look ordinary on paper.
The path Kelso took to get there wasn't.
The Hilanders traveled to Idaho for three games in three days.
They beat Union.
They beat Battle Ground at the Moda Center.
They went on the road and pushed a Tumwater team that eventually finished 24–4 to within two points.
They lost an overtime game to Mountain View by two.
They lost at Evergreen by one.
Then they turned around and beat Evergreen by 18.
They edged W.F. West by one at Lower Columbia College.
And when the season became win-or-go-home, Kelso defeated Shelton by 22 points to extend its season.
Perhaps most importantly for the future, nine of the 12 players listed on the varsity roster were underclassmen.
Seven were juniors.
Two were sophomores.
The 2025–26 Hilanders experienced close games, road trips, league battles, neutral-site games and postseason pressure together.
