In March, we established Invictus Wrestling Inc., a nonprofit organization founded with a simple goal: to provide a year-round wrestling program for our middle and high school athletes so they could continue developing their skills during the offseason and pursue their goals of becoming regional and state-level competitors.
Under the previous administration of King William County Public Schools, we were approved to utilize the King William High School Field House. We submitted all required documentation, including proof of insurance, and had satisfied all requirements necessary to begin operating. Based on that approval, we launched our program and began practices in May.
In June, we were asked once again to provide proof of insurance, which we promptly submitted. Then, on June 17, we received an email from the School Board informing us that Invictus Wrestling would no longer be permitted to use the KWHS Field House after June 30. This decision created significant confusion, particularly because we had already received prior approval, complied with all requested requirements, and had been actively operating our program.
Since that time, we have worked diligently to find a path forward. In July, many of our parents, wrestlers, and board members attended the School Board meeting, where our President spoke on behalf of the organization and the athletes we serve. Throughout these discussions, several board members appeared supportive of finding a solution that would allow the program to continue. We were subsequently asked to present a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), which we did.
Today, however, we received notification that the school division will not approve use of the KWHS Field House for any organization other than school athletics.
We are deeply disappointed by this decision because of the impact it will have on our students. Invictus Wrestling was created to provide local athletes with the opportunity to train, improve, and compete at a higher level without having to travel long distances or incur substantial additional costs. The loss of access to this facility places a significant obstacle in front of young people who are willing to invest the time, effort, and commitment necessary to achieve their goals.
This is not just about a room or a building. It is about providing opportunities for our students. It is about supporting their growth, discipline, work ethic, and pursuit of excellence. Most importantly, it is about ensuring that King William wrestlers have the same opportunities to develop and succeed as athletes in neighboring communities.
While this decision is discouraging, we remain committed to serving our wrestlers and their families. We will continue exploring every available option to ensure our athletes have the opportunity to train, improve, and achieve their goals.
Our wrestlers deserve nothing less.
