Roof and gutter cleaning…Should I wait til its really bad to have it cleaned? 🤔

The short answer: NO.

Longer answer…Living in the PNW, it is already a natural breeding ground for moss, algae, and lichens. The more winters (important because moss thrives with water) that your roof has moss on it, the moss begins to compound and often times people don’t realize until years of damage have been manifesting under the moss. Moss have a thing called rhizoids (think of it like their sticky arms and legs) that anchor them to your composition roof. In the summer the moss can go rather dormant but in the fall/winter/spring, it can readily produce due to the moist climate and lots of rain that we get.

Moss is fundamentally bad for several reasons:
1) moss is like a sponge…where moss sits, so will water and no water saturating any place on your roof, is ever good.

2) moss, with the “expanding/contracting” it does between summer and winter can end up raising shingles up (curling) which can become very problematic in wind storms.

3) moss can act like a glue, so the more time that goes by of it latching on to your roofing material, it can actually get to a point where, when removed, it can take off roofing material, which isn’t good

4) moss/algae can be a major slipping hazard while on your roof, if you ever put up Christmas lights or walk on roof, etc.

Getting your roof cleaned by a company? Ensure two things:

1) They do not use a pressure washer (voids any roof warrantee: you have a problem with a leaky roof afterwards…there is nothing you can do).

2) They do not use a bristle brush or broom to clean your roof. Years will be taken off your composition roof. This process weakens and degrades your roof.

As spring is right around the corner, here are some suggestions for hiring out your roof cleaning, gutter cleaning, pressure washing, and siding cleaning needs:

1. Always ensure they are licensed, bonded, and insured.

2. Ensure they have some years (experience) behind their business and are well versed with your needs. Ask a lot of questions and have them describe in detail their process.

3. Ask for a portfolio. The detailer should be able to present tons of before/afters showcasing their work they’ve done for other customers, and allowing you to see what you can expect.

4. Lots of scam artists. Never pay a dime until the work is 100% done and you are 100% happy. That is an absolute, not a recommendation. Ensure you get what you are paying for.

5. Simply put, everyone knows the quality you get shopping at W*lMart versus N*rdstrom. The same applies with anything in life. Quality matters when protecting single handedly, the most expensive part of your house to replace…your roof.
