We’re still looking for volunteers for our 25th Anniversary Gala on September 19th. Volunteers must be 16+ and might be assigned to a multitude of tasks.

All volunteers must attend ONE training session on either 9/12 at 2:00 pm or 9/16 at 6:00 pm.

Join us for the Lakeside’s River Park Conservancy 25th Anniversary Gala on September 19 as we celebrate 25 years of protecting and restoring our local river park!

Enjoy an evening of dinner, drinks,entertainment, silent and live auctions, a paddle raise, and a celebration of the people who have helped make River Park what it is today.

Thanks to grant funds from the San Diego River Conservancy, the river park’s Field Crew works with East County river property owners to remove hazardous fire fuel, manage vegetation, and reduce the risks of wildfire along the San Diego River.

We try to set property owners up for success by sharing best practices for ongoing maintenance.

In that spirit, we would like to share that information here as well! By featuring one tip each month that enhances fire safety while also protecting native habitat.

Tip # 1: Lift Trees

Removing lower branches 6-10’ off the ground prevents a surface fire from climbing up into the tree canopy and spreading quickly in the wind. Strategic pruning also strengthens trees.

We’re getting ready for our 25th Anniversary Celebration of Nature & Wildlife Gala on September 19, and we need volunteers to help make the evening a success!

Not every willow stake we plant survives, and that’s an important part of restoration.

Over the past year, our volunteers planted approximately 3,500 native willow stakes along the San Diego River as part of our effort to restore riparian habitat. While many have established successfully, others have not.

One of the interesting patterns we’ve observed is that willows growing near cattails and other consistently wet areas have generally had higher survival rates than those in drier locations. These observations help us better understand the river and guide future restoration efforts.

Habitat restoration is a long-term process of planting, monitoring, learning, and adapting. Every season teaches us something new, and every volunteer plays a role in that progress.

What happens after planting? 🌱

Restoration doesn’t end when the planting is done. One of the most important parts of our Willow Staking Project is what happens afterward: monitoring, learning, and adapting.

A small group of volunteers has been checking planted areas, removing stakes that didn’t take root, and helping us better understand what conditions help native willows succeed along the San Diego River. Every season teaches us something new, and every volunteer helps move restoration forward.
