I got to wear a pretty cute outfit last night lol. It was a busy doula week. I had a postpartum appointment Monday night, new client consult Tuesday night, baby on Wednesday, and a new client consult tonight. Also processing a placenta tonight and then have a new client and a postpartum appointment on Saturday.
I'm a little tired but I love being able to help so many moms. It's definitely never a dull job, every baby decides to arrive very differently ❤

There are so many unspoken truths in the journey of weaning. As I have embarked on this journey with my third daughter I’ve come to ponder many questions and been in search of many answers. Specifically, the physiological process that takes place in a woman’s body during this journey.
When I nursed my first two daughters, the hormonal regulation happened instantaneous because I was pregnant with my next baby. Some of the same hormones present in pregnancy are present when nursing. So, since pregnancy hormones were present in my body — there wasn’t much regulating that had to physiologically take place. However, this time around, weaning has been so different because pregnancy is absent from the equation. Therefore, the hormones in my body are reverting back to their post pregnancy/nursing state and re-adapting in ways that I had never experienced. The headaches, the nausea, the insomnia, the emotional and mental toll that has taken place is so “new.” If I am being honest, it feels as if my body is going through this intense withdrawal — as if I were coming down from a high. Ironically, after some research, I discovered my body was doing just that.
As I researched the physiological process that takes place in a woman’s body as weaning happens— I found that there is a significant decrease in the hormones prolactin and oxytocin. This in turn causes the body to experience a state of withdrawal. The hormone oxytocin is known as the feel good hormone, while the prolactin hormone is responsible for the well-being, calmness and relaxation feelings. Please note, I am no medical doctor and everyone’s body does acclimate differently. However, through conversations with other moms, its been interesting to discover that they too have experienced to some degree — the symptoms I’ve outlined.
For the past 6 years of my life (because of pregnancy and nursing) my body had adapted to this natural high. Now, all that has come to a halt. This now begs the question, if a woman’s body is going through this physiological process that can take anywhere between 6-8 weeks to revert back to its intent state… why aren’t more women speaking about it? Could it be shame? Could it be fear? Could it be that there isn’t a safe place or someone who is willing to sympathize or empathize? Whatever the case may be, there needs to be more awareness.
Although a lack of research proves it difficult to provide statistical evidence on post-depression weaning because of the hormonal regulation taking place — it’s safe to say it’s a thing. So, how does a woman navigate through this journey? It varies. Everyone’s journey looks different, but I am so thankful to serve a God who always has answers. The word of God has been my strength and refuge. Every morning before getting out of bed — I read a chapter from the book of Proverbs. I am currently on week 2 of the weaning process and every day has been different. However, every day I make it a point to wake up and remind myself that my JOY is found solely in HIM. Every morning I have to be purposeful and intentional and say to myself, “today is a good day to have a good day.” I have to intentionally create an environment where I will thrive and not fall prey to my feelings. Additionally, during the process of hormone regulation, exercising and eating healthy is key because it has proven to produce positive effects on the body.
Wherever you find yourself on the spectrum of this journey — know that you’re not alone. Find a safe person that you can share your journey with because being honest and vulnerable with the right person births accountability, which in turn helps generate a successful journey. If you know of someone who is weaning, reach out to them today! Let them know you’re there, let them know they are seen. Send them love. Sending you lots of love today!
Blessings,
Your Mommy-Friend 🤍

This is very interesting and concerning. So glad I have learned about natural cleaners now bit I wish I had known more during my pregnancies.
Pregnant women who use disinfectants regularly at work are more likely to have children who develop asthma or eczema by age 3, a large study out of Japan found.
