Building Firearm Skills: Dry Firing - Nevada Shooters Club 08/05/2022

If you asked someone how they would get better at shooting, the first thing they would say is shooting. That makes sense and isn’t wrong, but there is training to be done before that can be more effective, especially for beginners.

Think of going to the range like full contact sparring in the martial arts. You wouldn’t sign up to learn martial arts and on day one spar with a black belt. You would probably want to learn some techniques first, drill them, and as you build skill in your techniques, you would test them out in sparring.

In fact, that is how the martial arts is structured. I would know, as I have been training in the martial arts for over 26 years. But there is nothing unique to the structured approach that the martial arts takes, as training with fi****ms is no different. So before running to the range to pop off a few rounds, we first want to work on our technique. That is what dry firing is for...

What is the best caliber for self defense? - Nevada Shooters Club 08/04/2022

A common question people ask when procuring a firearm is what caliber gun should they get. Do you go big with a .500 Magnum, go small with a .22 Long Rifle, or somewhere in the middle, like a 9mm Luger?

There is no clear cut answer here, as it depends on a variety of factors. But before we get ahead of ourselves, lets make sure we know what we are talking about?

Warning: Graphic Violence on this video (albeit very blurry). The 21 Foot Rule is an important rule to remember when you are out and about. It refers to the Tueller Drill, (named after Dennis Tueller) whose studies and research recognized that 21 feet was the measure of distance that it would take an officer to recognize a threat, draw their gun, and fire two shots against an assailant charging with a knife.

At first glance, 21 feet might sound like a lot of distance, but it is not. That is about 7 steps for your average sized man, and can be covered within 1.5 seconds. In most interactions we have with people, we are well within that range already, so most of the time we would be at a huge disadvantage against an attacker with a blade.

As you can see in this tragic video, things go south immediately when the first officer closes the distance to hit the knife man with a baton. To see our breakdown, and some drills to work on, visit our blog: https://nevadashootersclub.com/the-21-foot-rule

A carjacking is a terrible situation to be caught in. The carjacker is going to look to ambush you when you are most vulnerable, usually when you are fiddling with your keys to open the car, perhaps looking through your purse or wallet, or as in this case, as you are entering the car and have your hands occupied.

The criminal here ran up to the victim in broad daylight with gun in hand to rob this lady. Then, an innocent bystander yelled at the carjacker, which quickly got his attention and he pointed the gun pointed in that direction, before he returned to his original target. He got her out of the car, took her possessions, and drove off with her car.

What would you have done?

Our analysis of this situation is posted on our blog here: https://nevadashootersclub.com/armed-carjacking-caught-on-camera/

What type of holster do you use?

A common question people ask that are new to concealed carrying is what type of holster they should get.

Once again, we don’t have a clear answer – it all depends on your lifestyle and use case.

There are 4 factors to consider when choosing a concealment device:

Concealment – how well it hides your gun

Accessibility – how easy is it to get your gun from the holster

Retention – how well does it hold the gun in place, and protect against someone trying to take the gun from your holster

Comfort – probably the most important, as an uncomfortable holster will probably not be used, and result in you leaving your firearm at home...
