What actually happens when a horse breathes during exercise, and why does it matter more than most riders think?
Hosted by Ask AnimalWeb, this podcast episode brings together Animal Physiologist and Biochemist Dr. David Marlin, and veterinarian and co-inventor of FLAIR® Equine Nasal Strips Jim Chiapetta, for a deep dive into equine breathing, performance, and respiratory health. Tune in as they unpack decades of research, real-world application, and the evolution of FLAIR® Strips.
From airway resistance and EIPH to recovery, lung health, and performance across disciplines, this conversation connects the dots between breathing efficiency and how horses feel, perform, and recover. Whether you’re competing or simply want to better understand your horse, this is one worth listening to.

Equine asthma makes every breath more difficult. 🫁😩
An inflamed airway restricts airflow and increases the effort required to breathe during exercise. Even small reductions in airway diameter can significantly decrease airflow, forcing the horse to generate greater negative pressure to inhale.
This increases respiratory effort, reduces breathing efficiency, and places additional stress on the respiratory system—while requiring more oxygen and blood flow to support the muscles involved in breathing.
