-Tradition and Respect: The belt system in jiu-jitsu is deeply rooted in tradition and serves as a symbol of respect for the art, its history, and its lineage. Wearing a belt acknowledges the discipline and dedication required to progress through the ranks and honors the instructors and lineage that have guided the practitioner's journey.

-Safety and Control: During training and competitions, the belt serves a practical purpose by helping to secure the uniform (gi) worn by practitioners. Tying the belt tightly around the waist helps to keep the gi in place, preventing it from coming loose or shifting during grappling exchanges, which could otherwise pose safety risks to both practitioners.

-Grip and Control: The belt can also be used as a grip and control point during grappling techniques. Practitioners may utilize their own or their opponent's belt to establish grips for techniques such as throws, takedowns, and submissions, adding an additional element to the strategic aspects of jiu-jitsu training and competition.

An interesting fact about jiu-jitsu is its evolution from ancient Japanese martial arts to modern Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ).
