Making Waves Swim School

Another mini lesson! This one is for kickers!

This is a relatively simple one… what you’ll need is the edge of a couch or bed. Have your child lay on their stomach with their knees and lower legs sticking off the bed. Have them point their toes and kick their legs up and down with straight legs! If your child is younger do the same but place one hand on each one of their legs and move them up and down, do this slow and gently! We’re not looking for perfection at this stage but this will help their coordination for when they get into the water. Make it fun, shout out different commands “kick fast, now slow motion, now stop!”

Or like in our video, let you child wrap their hands around your neck and rest their chin on your shoulders. Place their shins in the palms of your hands and lightly move their legs up and down. Your goal is to keep their legs straight with pointed toes, and to go straight up and straight down.

Let me tell you about an adorable boy who started out not totally down with the idea of swim lessons…I’m mostly talking tears…The first summer he started he was pretty hesitant about lessons but picked things up really quickly when he was distracted enough! Summer two and we are throwing him into the pool and letting him swim back on his own. We love seeing our students gain confidence in their swimming abilities. As always a parent, or trusted adult, should always be with children if they are in or around the pool. But how fun is it for our little ones to be able to learn a new skill and gain confidence not only in their swimming, but in themselves!
