Bay Area Tar Heels

The Bay Area Tar Heels would like to invite your son to try out for our Winter 2020-21 AAU teams. We will be having teams at the 3rd, 6th, 7th, and 8th grade levels. The tryout times and locations are:

Saturday, October 24 (Location: Union Middle School, 2130 Los Gatos Almaden Rd, San Jose)

3rd and 6th grades: 11am-12pm

7th-8th grades: 12-1pm

Saturday, October 31 (Location: Union Middle School, 2130 Los Gatos Almaden Rd, San Jose)

3rd and 6th grades: 11am-12pm

7th-8th grades: 12-1pm

The Tar Heels will practice 2 times per week during the season, with each practice running an hour and a half. Practices will be outdoors until we are able to get back inside gyms in our area. The practices will focus on fundamental skill development and team offensive and defensive concepts. Practices will begin the weekend of Saturday, November 7th. After tryouts, we will have 2 ball handling, shooting and conditioning sessions during the week on Zoom on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30-4:30pm. We are trying to maximize daylight and getting in shape to play, while also having a routine of what we are doing with the players.

The coaches for the teams will be coaches from local high school teams who also have numerous years of experience coaching AAU.

Each team will play in 12 games on 6 Saturdays over the course of the season. The majority of the games will be in Sacramento on Saturdays at this time, but if tournaments open up more locally, we will change that schedule to reduce the distance we are driving. The dates we will play our games are: Dec 12 & 19; Jan 2, 16, and 30; Feb 13.

Because the season starts so quickly, we will be sending out invitations to join the team following the last tryout, and will need confirmation if your son would like to play on the team rather quickly so we can order uniforms and gear. The practice times will be on the welcome email.

Each player who joins the team will receive a Nike Tar Heels t-shirt, and a uniform if the player needs one.

The cost for the season is $1000 for returning players with uniforms, and $1,075 for players who need uniforms. The costs cover the uniforms and gear, tournament entry fees, court rental, coaches’ travel, and other administrative expenses. Every player who joins will also need an AAU card for the season. We realize that we live in uncertain times right now as the coronavirus continues to impact people's lives. If we have to shut down in-person workouts and not play tournaments, we will pivot to Zoom basketball workouts as we did in the Fall. In the event that we are forced to have Zoom workouts only, everyone will receive a 50% refund. This will be prorated based on expenses if we play in 3 tournaments (25% refund), etc. Our hope is that this will obviously not happen, but wanted to give our plan going forward in case things change. If you are interested in having your son participate just in practices and Zoom workouts but not games, please contact us to discuss that.

After tryouts, we will have 1 skill development session per week before we begin practices.

Each team will play in 7 tournaments over the course of the season. All 5th-8th grade teams will be traveling to Las Vegas from July 8-12. Here are the dates for the 5th-8th Grade Tournaments:

Great week of basketball in Las Vegas at the Jam On It West Coast National Championships. Both teams played well and took home some hardware. Great way to end the spring/summer season. Thanks to all our families for there support.

The Bay Area Tar Heels would like to invite you to try out for our Fall 2019 teams. All tryouts will be held at Archbishop Mitty High School, 5000 Mitty Ave, San Jose, CA, 95129. The Tar Heels will begin practice in August immediately after forming teams. We will have teams at the 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th grade levels. The season will run from August until the end of October, with each team practicing 2-3 times per week and participating in the City League hosted by Bay City Basketball. The team will be playing two games each of the following Saturdays: Sep 7, Sep 21, Oct 5, Oct 19, and playoffs on the weekend of Oct 26 & 27.

The Tar Heels will practice 2-3 times per week during the season, with each practice running an hour and a half. The practices will focus on fundamental skill development and team offensive and defensive concepts. Practices will begin immediately after the results of tryouts have been shared with parents, the weekend of Friday, August 17th. We will also have an hour of conditioning on Sunday mornings each week that we do not have games on Sunday.

The coaches for the teams will be coaches from local high school teams who also have numerous years of experience coaching AAU. We will also have a number of former players helping us with coaching responsibilities as well.

Each team will play in The City League, hosted by Bay City Basketball. The City League guarantees two games per weekend, with the final weekend of play being a playoff tournament. The dates for the City League are September 8/9, September 22/23, October 6/7, October 20/21, and October 27/28 (playoff tournament). We request to play all our games on Saturday for the first four weekends of the league before the playoffs. The game locations are anywhere from the Peninsula to Pacifica to San Francisco. We generally learn of the times and locations of the games the week of the games.
