New to Town - Looking for Local Gym Town Hall is now preparing Welcome Kits for new families that are moving into our community. These new families are looking for a new EVERYTHING! Town Hall contacts these new families each week as soon as they move into their new home. These new families will find new places to eat, work out, wash their car......they need a new Hair Salon, Spa, Auto Repair Shop, Optometrist, Dry Cleaner, Pet Groomer, Day Care Facility, Florist, Nail Salon, get the idea. They are actively seeking new local businesses and creating new purchasing patterns. They will become someone's next new local, loyal customer. Town Hall will direct them to you before your competition even knows they are here. Since our Welcome Kits are exclusive, and we can only accommodate one business per category, I would ask you to kindly let me know if you are interested in being featured in our local Welcome Kits. I would like to schedule a time when you are expecting me so that I may drop off a sample of our "Welcome Kit" and explain the program in greater detail. Please reply to this email with your availability or call me at your earliest convenience. For a faster response, or if you prefer, feel free to text me on my cell which is listed in my signature. Thanks. Karla Cain (540) 664-5514

2 Reasons Why Bodyweight Training is Better for BJJ BJJ Weight Training is a topic that can be hotly debated. Some people don’t think you should any strength work for Jiu Jitsu. Although the debate that we always love is whether weight training or bodyweight training is better strength work for Jiu Jitsu. Generally, yes you can get stronger just by...

You Get In Shape For Jiu-Jitsu By Showing Up For Jiu-Jitsu

Come get in shape with us. 💪🥋 There’s a lot of truth to the idea that if you wait for the “perfect” time to start doing something, you’ll never do it. The concept is certainly true for jiu-jitsu, though a lot of people don’t want to believe it. Jiu-jitsu is a very obviously athletic martial art — it doesn’t take an...

Training AROUND your injuries, not THROUGH them.

Injuries are an inevitable part of long-term jiujitsu training. We can minimize them by adhering to basic safety guidelines, but we can never eliminate them.

Unless it's extremely severe, most injuries will allow some sort of training. Extremely modified drills, non-resisted repetitions, or sparring with one arm tucked in your belt. Don't use the injury as an excuse to sit around and get lazy.

Get ideas from your coach or training partners on how to train around your injury. Clear those ideas with your physician or physical therapist and get to work.

Keep in mind that there's a clear difference between training 'around' an injury, and training 'through' it. Chronic pain and dysfunction shouldn't be ignored. It's a sign that our bodies need treatment, a break, or some lower intensity work.

When your training outpaces your recovery and that only thing keeping you on the mat are painkillers and stimulants, you're in a downward spiral. Don't be afraid to take some time off. Exhaustion and small injuries set you up for larger catastrophic ones. Avoid those at all costs.

See you on the mats.

Of all the people I’ve ever met who said: “Once I lose some weight, I’m gonna do some jiu-jitsu,” none of them ever did jiu-jitsu. Of all the people who ever said: “I’m gonna do some jiu-jitsu to lose some weight,” every single one lost weight.
Congrats to @brockwiththestrongname on all the hard work and the @valentebrothers for creating such an inclusive training environment. For those of you still searching for a New Year’s Resolution, Brock might be able to point you in the right direction. 👊🏽

Ryron and Rener Gracie answer the 10 most common questions asked by new students prior to their first BJJ class:

1) What's the difference between jiu-jitsu and every other martial art?
2) What if I don't have any previous experience?
3) Do I need to be in shape?
4) What should I wear?
5) Do I need to bow or call someone "sensei?"
6) Can I bring a water bottle and where do I store it?
7) Who will I practice with?
8) Will I get injured or embarrassed?
9) Can I bring a friend to class?
10) How will my first go?

With the uncertainty out of the way, no you have no excuse. Take your first jiu-jitsu class, you won't regret it!

When it comes to where to take your first class, you have 4 options:

1) Find a Certified Training Center at We can personally vouch for these schools because we've personally certified the instructors that own and operate them, the techniques and the friendly culture will mirror what you would find in Torrance. If your intro class at any CTC doesn't exceed all your expectations, you can choke me for free.

2) Find a local BJJ school that isn't a CTC. Just make sure you ask questions to make sure they align with your goals (self-defense, sport, fitness, scheduling, etc), and watch a class before you participate. If you’re not impressed, go to number 3, trying a single class at a poorly operated BJJ school could be a disaster.

3) Learn online through We have tens of thousands of people who are actively learning jiu-jitsu online, from home! All you need is one dedicated training partner and you can learn for as little as $20/month. If you can't find a partner, simple check the online GU Student Database to connect with eager students in your neighborhood!

4) If you're 100% committed and want to get off on the right start, but don't live near a CTC, simply email [email protected] and we can send an instructor to teach you in your house for up to a week straight to jumpstart your jiu-jitsu journey. Bottom line: if you’re ready, we’ll make it happen!

Jiu-jitsu is for you. Stop thinking about it and take your first class!

NFL Cheerleaders Learn Jiu-Jitsu for the First Time!

In this special Women Empowered seminar we gave the Charger Girls the confidence to set boundaries and the techniques to stay safe when the boundaries are ignored.

I’ve often wondered what the world would be like if women were physically dominant to men. How would that change men's and women's roles in society?
Regardless of how strong I’ve always felt, I’ve been aware my entire life that even the average man can impose his will on me. My exposure to jiu-jitsu was the first time I felt there was a way to level the playing field.

Two most “Gracie Breakdown worthy” parts of this video: 1) open hands saying “I don’t want to fight you!” and 2) not a single punch thrown, even when he had the perfect chance and the perfect motive. 🙌🏽 #bjj

Why Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Is A Great Sport for Unathletic Children

Unathletic? Jiu-Jitsu is for you! 🥋👊 As a child and teenager, I loved sports, but was simply not athletic. I couldn’t dribble a basketball or shoot a layup. How To Find Time For Jiu-Jitsu While Having A Full-Time Job And School

If you don’t want to, you’ll find all kind of excuses; if you want to, nothing in this world will stop you.😎🤙 At some point in our training, I’m sure we’ve all been on one end or the other of a guilt trip for missing class. Jiu-jitsu seems to have its own time zone, one in which your teammates feel like if you skip a day, it’s been a week since they’ve seen you; if you skip …

It’s just a matter of perception. 👊💪🥋
