Loudoun County Aeromodelers Association

Hi folks,

Apologies in advance if this is not the correct place or way of making this post on your group, but I cannot seem to find an advertising / info space where to post this on your group, and I believe the information below is most likely important and relevant information to your members - which they should be informed about - I'm not "selling" anything below, and everything is freely downloadable and accessible to your membership.

This is a courtesy message to let you know that your flying location and R/C club has been included in a new R/C app called "aeromura", which brings you real-time weather and forecasts, not just for this flying location, but all those nearby as well.

(***Important note *** : Please read to the bottom of this message - it has a very important comment relating to your
specific flying location).

Developed over the past two years, by R/C pilots for R/C pilots, the aeromura app has now been launched for the first time in the app stores.

Flying locations and the data is maintained and controlled by the pilot community which uses the app, (not us), and can be added and modified by any pilot, for the benefit of the whole pilot community.

Essential to every pilot, you might like to advertise and give this information to your club members for their benefit.

aeromura is freely downloadable from both the Apple and Google app stores.

Take a look at the preview video below to see how your flying location may be appearing - we hope you will be suitably impressed:

Android pilots get it for free on the Google Playstore here : https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.brainworx.aeromura

Apple iPhone pilots get it for free on the Apple Playstore here: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/id1526771501

As an introductory promotion, we are giving away 5 X FREE 1 year ANNUAL subscriptions a day, covering the next year, for the premium version, to the first 5 pilots who PM me with the email address they used to sign up with - take advantage NOW, before this limited offer expires! ;)

*** IMPORTANT NOTE *** If your flying location has security problems due to burglary, or for any other reason, and you would
prefer it NOT to be visible on the app to the general public, please let me know so that
your flying location can be marked as PRIVATE and NOT VISIBLE to the general public - no questions asked ***

This is the organized protest of FAA's remote ID proposal. Show up to support a hobbyist exemption that will preserve scale modeling, aerobatic competition, discuss launch gliders, FPV racing, fly-ins, STEM opportunities for the next generation, and weekends outdoors with friends and family.
A nice summary of how the FAA's proposed remote identification rule would affect model airplanes. Make sure to submit your comments by March 2.
For anyone who might be interested, NovaLabs is running a class on learning to fly quadcopters via first person view. The $250 fee for the class includes the gear you need to get started.
Looks like we have a TFR for Saturday, 0800-1430 Local

We are a model aircraft flying club sanctioned by the Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA). We are an enthusiastic group of modelers - both men and women, who like to fly model aircraft.

Operating as usual

After several weather delays, the club held its first picnic of 2022 on Sunday, May 15th. The weather was perfect. Warm, but not too hot, and only a light breeze. Several planes got maidened, and a few met their demise. There were more crashed than you can count on one hand. Guess we all need to get the rust off. Hope to see every back again in wo weeks for the Memorial Day picnic. Just a reminder, that picnic will be on Monday, May 30th.

If you are a model airplane enthusiast, take a minute to learn about Maynard Hill. He was local and kind of a big deal.

A Salute to Aeromodeling’s Lindbergh.
June 7, 2021, marked the 10th anniversary of the passing of Maynard Hill.
MANY HAVE SAID that if there was a Mount Rushmore for aeromodelers Maynard Hill would certainly be on it. He was one of a kind who passed away in June at age 85. Maynard will be sorely missed.

Flying season is here! Don’t miss our first picnic of the year on Saturday, July 3. The club will provide hot dogs, burgers, and drinks. Open flying, combat, fun fly, maybe even some fpv racing. We will have volunteer instructors on hand to help out, whether you’re a new pilot or just a little rusty.

Anyone building anything these days? Here are some photos of the latest old timer I am working on - The Lanzo Bomber from Brodack Models.

Here is some background on the designer:

Chester D. Lanzo was a model airplane pioneer who started building model airplanes in 1922 at the age of eight. His modeling career extended over a period of 65 years, until the time of his death on August 13, 1989. Chester was well known world wide for his expertise in model airplanes.

In 1937, Chester won first place in the first National Radio Control Contest ever held.

Chester started designing and building his own Radio Control system about 1933. His first Radio Control model, built and flown in 1934, was a 7-foot span cabin model. Chester called it Radio Control No. 1. It is now commonly known as the RC-1. This model proved too fast to be controlled with his primitive radio control system. His second Radio Control model had a 12-foot span, which flew very slowly. Chester named it the Racer. Unfortunately, he crashed it prior to the 1936 Nationals in which he planned to enter the model. The 1937 Radio Control Champion model, known as the Radio Control Stick was his third Radio Control model. In 1938, Chester designed a 9-foot span Radio Control glider, which he flew in the 1939 Nationals. It was the first Radio Control glider to compete in a National Radio Control Contest. He named it Airborn.

He held records in outdoor stick, cabin, and rubber speed. Chester's designs are in Air World, Flying Models, Air Trails, Model Airplane News, and the Model Aeronautics Yearbooks by Frank Zaic. Burd Models kitted several of Chester's Free Flight designs.

Chester worked in various fields of engineering such as electrical, instrumentation, heat transfer, nuclear and lasers. He authored numerous reports for the Lewis Research Center.

Chester was inducted into the following Halls of Fames:
> Model Aviation Hall of Fame
> National Free Flight Society Hall of Fame
> Society of Antique Modelers Hall of Fame

The Bomber has been the dominant winner in recent years in the Society of Antique Modelers contests. The Bomber won many contests, mainly in the Radio Control Assist contests.

That time of the year again! LCAA membership, AMA and possibly FAA renewals are all due. We are also encouraging members to join the Friends of Banshee Reeks club too (www.bansheereeksnp.org).

It is a little snowy right now, but the field is in good shape and the charging station is operational - but you have to have a current membership to fly. So why not renew now?!

Good to see Josh and Josh back together. I am looking forward to seeing Fly Girls.

As per FAA TFR 1/4508 the field is closed to all flying on January 20th through January 21st for inaugural events.

Our monthly club meeting is tonight at 7:30 pm. The link to the Google meeting is in the Airbag and in the announcement section of our LCAA Slack.

4th of July picnic! We are going to do it responsibly. Hamburgers and hot dogs made to order and served to you on a paper plate. You take the plate and social distance yourself and enjoy your meal. Bagged chips, bottled water and sodas will also be served. The cook and food deliverers will be wearing masks and gloves.

If you have a combat plane bring it. The planes don't have to social distance but the pilots will! Otherwise, it will be a leisurely event with folks just flying
