Seward County Community College head coach Austin Downing believes the Saints can separate themselves from the competition through hard work, unselfish basketball and a commitment to playing the game the right way.

Rather than relying on individual talent, Downing wants his players moving the basketball, attacking the paint and creating opportunities for one another. After shooting 35% from three last season, he credits that success to ball movement and an offensive approach that gets everyone involved.

“Where we try to separate ourselves is just being the hardest-working team, being the team that’s going to play together.”

For Downing, that philosophy extends to the defensive end and preparing players for the next level. By defending at a high level, creating transition opportunities and learning to impact games in multiple ways, the Saints are developing habits that can translate into future recruiting opportunities.

“We really want to try to teach guys how to play the right way and do things that are going to translate to the next level.”

Seward County Community College head coach Austin Downing likes what he’s seeing from his group early, especially when it comes to their work ethic and willingness to compete.

With 21 players on the roster, competition is built into every practice as players push one another and battle for opportunities. A strong group of returners and redshirts has also given Seward experienced players capable of helping lead the way as the team continues building chemistry.

“They work hard every day. They push one another. They compete at a very high level.”

As the Saints continue through the preseason and upcoming jamborees, Downing knows exactly what he wants to become a staple of the program’s identity.

“We’re gonna compete. We play hard and we try to play for one another for sure.”
