The number one sign a school is struggling financially is something most families walk past on a tour. 👇

In my experience in higher ed, it’s 𝗱𝗲𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲. That means repairs the school keeps putting off.

🚧 Are the 𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝘄𝗮𝗹𝗸𝘀 cracked and broken?
🏢 Is there 𝗱𝗮𝗺𝗮𝗴𝗲 to the buildings that would be an easy fix?
🛏️ Do the 𝗱𝗼𝗿𝗺 𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗺𝘀 look worn down?
🗣️ What do the 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘆𝗲𝗿𝘀 say about the coaches, the school and the professors?

It’s better to see the red flags on a visit than after your child has committed. ⚠️

Once the tournament finishes, have your athlete review their performance and contact the coaches they reached out to beforehand. Share a brief update and relevant new footage. The work you do after an event can help maintain recruiting conversations.

On an unofficial visit, the tour is the easy part. The questions your child brings tell you if the program fits. 👇

Ask these three:

📚 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗯𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗰𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝘀𝗼 𝗜 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗱𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗲? Tie it to the major. Nursing? Ask how clinicals fit with practices and games.
🏀 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿? Transfer portal or high school players?
🤝 Ask the players: 𝗧𝗲𝗹𝗹 𝗺𝗲 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲.

A good answer is specific. A weak one is “Don’t worry, it works out.” ✍️

Arrange access to game footage before your next showcase or tournament. Afterward, help your athlete identify sequences that demonstrate their abilities, effort, and decision-making. Organized video makes it easier to share meaningful updates with coaches.

A first call can go well and still lead nowhere. It usually comes down to how the call ends. 👇

When I get on a first call, I’m listening for three things:

💬 Can they 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗿𝘆 𝗮 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, even if they’re nervous?
🏫 Do they show 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺?
🧠 Do they show 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳-𝗮𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀?

Then comes the question that keeps the process moving:

🎯 𝗖𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵, 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝘅𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗽, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗱𝗼?

A call that ends with no next step usually goes nowhere. Role-play it at home this week. 🏀

Coaches evaluate more than scoring averages and personal records. They consider how an athlete fits their team's needs, style of play, and level of competition. Watch games from your target programs and discuss where your child's strengths fit.

⏱️ Keep it 𝟲𝟬 𝘁𝗼 𝟵𝟬 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱𝘀
🔥 Open with your 𝗯𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘆, not a long intro
🏟️ Use 𝗴𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗹𝗺 only. No music, practice drills or filler
🔢 𝗜𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗳𝘆 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳 with your number and an arrow or circle
▶️ Post it on 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗧𝘂𝗯𝗲 so the link copies right into an email

Build playlists by year and by team: high school, club and AAU. If a coach likes the first video, the coach can keep watching. 📺

Check your child’s video today. Is the best play in the first 30 seconds? Can you find your child right away?

Encourage your child to review their public profiles through the eyes of a college coach. Keep recruiting information clear and highlight athletic achievements, leadership, and positive team experiences. Their online presence should reflect the person they want coaches to know.

Replies often start on the 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱, 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗿𝗱 𝗼𝗿 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘁𝗵 𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗹. Here’s how to follow up without becoming a nuisance:

⏰ Wait 𝟳 𝘁𝗼 𝟭𝟬 𝗱𝗮𝘆𝘀 before you follow up
✍️ Keep it 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗲, and have your child write it
👤 Email 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵, not the whole staff
🎬 𝗔𝗱𝗱 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗻𝗲𝘄 every time: film, a schedule, grades or one specific question

“Just checking in” gives a coach nothing. Give the coach something to respond to.

Sent three or four good emails with no reply? Put your energy into schools where your child fits better. 🎯
