Our skill this month is “resilience,” our ability to face challenges and bounce back. Summertime is upon us and this is when students get lazy and sacrifice training for going to the park, playing with their friends or even going to the pool. But what they’re really sacrificing is there ability to build discipline and resilience.
Our job is parents, is to simply parent … to show up and make hard decisions at times that are best for our kids.
All too often, we sacrifice short term discomfort by letting our kids choose what they want to do because we don’t want to fight them. But that sacrifice gives us short term, comfort, and long-term negative effects.
Instead, focus on the short term discomfort of having them not “forced to do something they don’t want to do,” instead … “motivate them to do what’s best.”
Kids don’t quit parents do!
If you as the parent or motivating your child and telling them how great they’re doing and how much you love watching them practice, they would be more interested and more motivated. Martial arts training is part of their life and education in the same sense that going to school is. You cannot look at it like a sport or an activity that is seasonal. Once they earn their black belt, it will be a life, achievement, and something they will carry with them the rest of their life.
This summer don’t give into short-term comfort and suffer from long-term consequences.
Instead, deal with short-term discomfort, motivate them to do what is best for them, and experience long-term benefits. We guarantee they will thank you in the end.
