Great clinic today with Coach Colin Heffernan. Handful of Fargo qualifiers in here as well and some elementary national team members and the future of NYS national teams. Thanks for playing a role in helping develop our area in freestyle.

Cool little history on Coach Colin’s uncle!
Jim Heffernan — the recruit Dan Gable couldn’t pass up.
In high school, Jim Heffernan won 2 state titles for St. Ed’s while leading them to 4 state team championships and their first national team championship during his senior season in 1982.
Heffernan was the nation’s #1 prospect coming out of high school, setting his sights on wrestling for Iowa under legendary coach Dan Gable.
However, Gable initially rejected Jim, telling him they didn’t need another recruit at his weight.
Just five days after their conversation, Iowa’s 150-pounder got pinned in their dual against Oklahoma, causing them to tie the match.
Gable hated ties.
Minutes after the dual, Gable called Heffernan, asking him if he could wrestle 150 — and the rest is history.
Heffernan excelled at Iowa, becoming a 4x All-American, 4x Big Ten champion, and a National Champion in 1986 — St. Ed’s first.
With Heffernan in the lineup, Iowa won 3 team national titles.
After college, Heffernan spent 29 years coaching at Illinois — 17 as an assistant and 12 as head coach — producing 73 All-Americans, 20 Big Ten champs, and 11 NCAA champions.
