Sunset Speaks ✨ Oh, so now he’s young. Now we understand neurological development. Now we understand rehabilitation. Now we understand that one decision shouldn’t necessarily define the entirety of somebody’s future. Interesting. Because Black boys have historically been denied the luxury of simply being boys. Too often, they are perceived as older, more culpable, more threatening, and less innocent than their white counterparts. Our children are asked to carry adult consequences before society even grants them the tenderness of childhood. And that is what infuriates me here. If the allegations and circumstances of this case are as reported, how do we arrive at dismissal and potentially expungement after conduct this serious, while Black children have been prosecuted with the full weight of systems that suddenly seem capable of discovering nuance, mercy, and rehabilitation? Apparently, forgiveness has a zip code. Rehabilitation has a complexion. And innocence has historically had an aesthetic. I am not arguing that young people should never receive second chances. I am asking why America’s definition of “young enough to save” has never seemed to apply equally.
