I began learning Northern Shaolim from my teacher in early 1977, I began to learn the Jian in the early 80’s and I am still learning today.

One teacher,
one style,
One focus,
one school.

One month from now we’ll be back in New York City for Part II of our Walking Dragon Swordsmanship workshop series.

This time, we go deeper.

We’ll add the next section of the practice form, but adding movements isn’t really the point. The work is in improving what happens between them, footwork, balance, timing, angle, continuity, and the relationship between the body and the sword.

We will of course be working the partner drills which leads to a practical understanding of the sword and its applications.

The solo form embodies a precise geometric method of movement. Partner practice gives us an opportunity to test those relationships against something real;
another person,
another weapon,
changing distance,
changing angle,
and changing timing.

That’s where things start becoming very interesting.

Part I gave us material to practice.

Part II begins asking what that material is actually teaching us.

New York City. Second week of October.
