Thermal cash register rolls shortage update.

Connect Chemicals in China, being located in a business park that is being temporarily shut down for environmental reasons. Connect Chemicals is the world’s largest producer of leuco dye, which is an essential component of thermal paper coating. They expect to remain closed for at least three months, if not longer, as they modify operations to comply with environmental regulations. This shortage of leuco dye has already caused at least one major thermal paper mill to significantly reduce their output. A thermal paper shortage is very real and could last until mid-2018.

We know that as of today January 3, 2018, that they are still shut down for at least the remainder of the month. Adding more bad news is that even if they are given the green light to resume production in February, which appears highly unlikely, the plant will remain closed the entire month to celebrate the Chinese New Year!

What this means is that there is a shortage of paper rolls and it's having a major impact on supply and price. Connect Chemicals has been closed since October 2017. That means that all the paper that was in transit from China to the U.S. has been received and there is nothing in the pipeline coming our way. In fact it is estimated that it's possible that there will be nothing in the pipeline until June of this year.

Many paper converters have already exhausted their supply and are no longer open for business. Many of the larger converters made large purchases prior to the shortage and have paper on hand which thy are only selling to long term customers and are not accepting new business in order to supply their long term accounts.
