I get a lot of questions about how to manage and deal with wrist pain in pilates …. Your shoulder blades can be a secret key into how much deep core activation you’re implementing.

When your shoulder blades wing, your body loses support from the serratus anterior and upper back muscles , and your wrists take the load.

Here are my go to cues to fix it :

push the floor away + wrap your shoulder blades around your ribs (Maintain a long straight upper back and neck to avoid over rounding )

Length from the crown of the head to the tailbone.

I get a lot of questions in class about ball placement and also see people struggling to find the perfect spot for the ball in toe taps - the change of placement is HUGE and makes all the difference in actually targeting your deep core …

Ball under your low back ➡️ you’ll often press into it, flatten, grip with the re**us, and move from the hip flexors.

Ball under your sacrum/tailbone ➡️ now you have to stabilize without gripping. This is where the deep core actually has to organize and support you.

That second setup makes it much harder to fake it and allows you to truly find a neutral pelvis as you strengthen your core.

Here are my form tips !

Placement : try putting the ball directly under your butt crack 😉 easiest way to explain it. It should feel like your pelvis opens up/ falls over the ball.
Drain the weight out of the legs, THEN lift to table top (this helps the core activate and not the hip flexors )
Ribs stay soft without “gripping “
Pelvis stays quiet
Maintain 90 degree angle as you lower the leg for toe tap

It’s subtle, but this is the kind of work that actually changes your core.

This is one of the most common form issues I see with my private clients and in general - knee hovers will be 10x more effective if you make this one simple shift ….

In a rounded spine, you’re mostly pushing into your outer abs. It feels like more effort, but you lose true deep core support and your neck and shoulders usually jump in to help.

In a long, neutral spine, your deep core (think transverse abdominis + pelvic floor) can fire the way it’s designed to.
This is your abdominal corset 🙌🏻 wrapping 360° around your spine, creating stability without gripping or bracing.

✨ What that should feel like:
• ribs stacked over pelvis
• a gentle lift through the pelvic floor
• length through the tailbone and crown of the head and a feeling of your belly muscles hugging AROUND your spine.

Now layer in your upper body:
• Neck: long, gaze slightly forward/down—no craning or dropping
• Scapula: wide and stable on your ribcage (no collapsing between the shoulders)
• Serratus anterior: gently engaged to protract + support, like you’re pushing the floor away without rounding your spine

When all of that clicks, the hover feels lighter, steadier, and way more connected 🔥
