It’s our current cohort’s second to last Second Sunday Dinner together in this program year, and we were ecstatic to commune with more of the Jubilee Consortium alumni and network! Many thanks to Mother Suzanne, Leah, Faith, Mariesa, Serenity and Mary for joining us for delightful food and conversation! Payton, our Program Director and Chaplain, is away on assignment and could not be with us in body, but we definitely had him there in thoughts and spirit!

This month’s theme was ‘Managing Money’, and the Hollywood House hosted an engaging program that included a lottery-inspired icebreaker, and a ‘Stories’ activity about a young man named Juliano and his financial decisions- an activity inspired by the episode “Bandersnatch” from the Netflix show “Bandersnatch” in which the viewers make decisions for the character. The following discussion covered deep introspection of financial responsibility, financial literacy, and how communities of varying position in the socio-economic hierarchy experience advantage, disadvantage, disparity and compromise of these concepts.

We're back again with JYLA word association and experiences!

In our corps members’ year of service, intentional community is a concept explored and a lifestyle experienced. In this experience, our corps navigate the complexities of sharing a household, responsibilities and resources, as well as learning and being attentive to the personalities, ideologies, habits and needs of the members they share the space with. It is an experience designed to take each corps’ socio-political, religious and spiritual diversity and create social cohesion, teamwork and camaraderie.

Here’s what Asma and Jannon have to say about their experience of community within JYLA!

On this #TBT, we’re taking it back to February’s retreat in the mountains of Julian, California with our friends Asma and Jannon! The two were paired to film a round of word association and experiences videos. And in between takes were many moments of banter and laughter! In explaining what community means to them, these outtakes are the physical interpretation of their community experience: friendship and fun. ✨

Let’s go, Ryan!

Check out our JYLA fellow planning immigrant and resettlement services with his team at his service site, IRIS Interfaith Refugee & Immigration Service, Los Angeles !

“One of my favorite things is seeing the clients come in. When they do, we socially distance outside, pick out some books, clothes, and toiletries that can help them- get a lot of things that really help them as immigrants or refugees. I enjoy working with clients and making a difference in their lives in America.” -Ryan

We appreciate you, Ryan! Keep shining ✨

''If the pandemic has taught us anything, it’s that people need other people. Membership in community helps us see our stake in our neighbors’ dreams and struggles, as well as our own. It deepens our understanding of others. We could use that in America right now. And that healing can begin with a robust investment in national service.''

We agree with former Governor of Massachusetts, Deval Patrick. National Service can be a leading force for social and economic healing in our communities.

The Hollywood House indulged in delicious Southern-style barbecue for community dinner last night thanks to our friend Casey. He served as the evening’s host and also is the Vice President of the H. Belfield Hannibal Chapter of the Union of Black Episcopalians, the organization responsible for our hearty dinner!

“We are grateful to the H. Belfield Hannibal Chapter of the Union of Black Episcopalians for sponsoring our meal last night as a token of appreciation for our corps members’ participation and assistance during the 2021 UBE Absalom Jones Service back in February.

Bludso's BBQ is a local Black-owned Texas-style barbecue restaurant that started in Compton. While it’s unique regional flavors are not exactly what you’d find at home in Georgia, Bludso’s Bar & Que location in West Hollywood has become one of my favorite places to go when I want a taste of smokey, Southern goodness.” - Casey

After months of strict limitations on Jubilee Year's Second Sunday dinner guest list, it was such a treat to be able to extend invites to some of our Jubilee board members and alum so they could meet our 20-21 JYLA fellows and enjoy an evening of delicious food and curated conversation!

The fellows prepared a wonderful meal and led a program focusing on the month's theme of health and wholeness which included accessible chair yoga, mindful mandala coloring, and dialogue on how we can apply them to our daily lives. We can't wait for next month and we're hopeful of being able to continue to invite more of our friends to share these special evenings with#jyla

The Hollywood House enjoyed a trip to Santa Barbara, CA over the weekend. This refreshing getaway was organized by Casey, a former resident of the area. He introduced Mesa Burger, State Street, Stearns Wharf and Saint Michael’s University Church to the crew.

“I spent the last four years of my life in Santa Barbara before becoming a member of this years corps. I had so much fun sharing some of the special places and people that I came to love so much with my new JYLA family.” - Casey

“Our trip to Santa Barbara was a great break from the city and bonding experience. Since we’re all vaccinated, it felt like a huge weight off of our shoulders to be outside. Even if we were social distanced and masked up. It was amazing to see St. Michael’s and their beautiful landscape. I definitely love the calmness of Santa Barbara compared to Hollywood.” - Asma

Upon moving to Los Angeles for a year of service and community, our JYLA fellows have and continue to explore the culture and follow the happenings in the city. We asked the corps what new accounts on social media they have followed and favorited since being in LA, and they revealed a wide range of content including inspiration, humor, food, and social justice initiatives.

Happy Women's History Month!

From public health expert Joanne Leslie to leadership development extraordinaire Suzanne Edwards-Acton our organization has been shaped by the talent, wisdom, energy, experience, and guidance of truly amazing women.

During Women's History Month Jubilee is reflecting on how we as a society will continue to listen to, celebrate, empower, and protect women. Such attention and energy is necessary as we seek to affirm the fullness of women's identities and experiences. This month, may we all examine the histories and legacies of women in new ways that break away from the lens of patriarchal cis heteronormativity that women, non-binary and genderfluid individuals have been subjected to. May our treatment of women reflect that of humanity and justice in every space. May we continue to amplify women’s voices, and express solidarity and support in private and public. May our perspective of women’s existence know no boundaries or limitations.

We hope that the increased attention to the lives, experiences, contributions, and advancements of women will extend beyond commemoration and become integral in daily life.

Please visit the link below for women's history resources.

A huge thank you to the women who have made Jubilee the organization it is and a very happy Women’s History Month!

This past weekend, the JYLA community enjoyed a wonderful socially-distanced outing at North Hollywood Park hosted by JYLA alumni! Many thanks to alumnae Serenity, Hannah, Mary, and Faith for treating the fellows to another evening of connection and bonding over tasty Trader Joe's snacks!

It was such a blast to swap service site stories, discuss "adulting", compare opinions on best and worst food in LA, and enjoy a bit of real human interaction that has been so rare during this pandemic.

We're so blessed to have such a beautiful, supportive community!
