I became disenchanted with vinyasa yoga and the LA yoga scene at the exact same time I stepped into start teaching.

I began teaching yoga as my full time job in 2001 and within a year was acutely aware that the movement scope within vinyasa felt limiting in its “choreography” and that it was unable to live up to promises that teacher trainings and the lore of yoga promised.

I couldn’t shake the LACK OF WHY behind the miraculous claims that yoga teachers and lineages espoused.

My queries got me in trouble. I got demoted at my flow studio for bringing remedial exercise (also known as corrective exercise) into my classes. What I saw was that the flow I was teaching was allowing students to bypass certain planes and ranges motion and giving them repetitive stresses on joints….they kept complaining of the same pains, the flow wasn’t the answer.

I had brought in teaching from other disciplines, massage, basic joint mobilization exercises, dance improvisation and more. This was disruptive, heretical, and disrespectful. There was no longer a place for me at the studio, but one of my students, a big business executive knew what was going on and said to me, "just leave, we’ll follow you."

I left. Rented a martial arts studio and began the path of exploration that is now the disruptive functional yoga format, Yoga Tune Up® that helps people to embody their body with a foundation of corrective movement, self-massage, breath, mindset work and evidence-based anatomical explorations with a high emphasis on new fascia science.

I’ve been teaching YTU since 2004 and leading Teacher Trainings in Yoga Tune Up® since 2008. In the beginning, I faced a lot of pushback from the Yoga World. But now I see there are dozens of formats in the greater yoga space that have a similar mission to provide substantive best practices and to apply a much-needed critical eye to old beliefs.

I’m here for the long haul with Tune Up Fitness I hope you’ll join my first in-person course in 2 years, April 6-13 at Rising Lotus Yoga in Los Angeles (Sherman Oaks).

The new album -- two years in the making and over a decade of incubation -- is now everywhere. Will you listen to it? Will you share it? https://smarturl.it/AThousandTinyTorches

This is long, but it reflects a lot of what I'm thinking about this morning. So, if you want to know, here's a little more about the making of this:

On Presidents' Day weekend in 2018, without a concrete reason or plan, I started clearing out an old forgotten garden some previous resident had created in a shady spot behind the garage. Nothing grew there anymore, the irrigation system was chewed through by squirrels, the raised bed covered in dead branches. That day, I woke from a bizarre dream, and can't say why, but was propelled by the need to clean up the debris.

Two months later, on that spot, I erected a 10x12 shed. It was hard to justify the effort and cost, especially because we rent our house and so it will all be lost if we have to move. But we've lived here since 2011, so I followed an instinct of trust, hoped the landlord will be kind, and thought I'd start a podcast or something.

The next day began a six week stint of compulsively rushing home from work every day to play clarinet (my first instrument, which I've played since I was 8) in my shed. After about 40 days, I put down the clarinet and picked up my guitar. I wrote Someone Else's Dream, my first song in years.

As that song emerged, it became a call to action. I was singing, "What do you do with someone else's dream? What can you say when you're caught between who you are and who you want to be?"

That's a hard question to ask. It's looking frankly in the mirror at the face of a 40-something-year-old woman and having a come-to-Jesus kind of moment. Are you living in alignment with your values? And if not, what are you going to do with that?

The answer came to me full-force. I realized that my dream was to return to my love of songwriting and singing. That I wanted to connect with people heart-to-heart through melody and story. That I had finally, after many years since my last album, through ten years of teaching yoga, twelve years behind the scenes in the music industry, and an MFA in creative writing, knew that writing songs -- this sounds so silly when I say it, because what's a song? -- writing songs was the way I could best offer some kind of healing to the world, even if that healing was only my own.

I can't put to words the force of that call to action. I knew that if I answered the call, I would truly be living the life that felt most right for me. And that if I allowed my fears and self-doubt to drive me away, that I would live the rest of my life dissatisfied.

I had a lot of self-doubt. A lot of fear that I wasn't capable of returning to music. A lot of fear that what I had to offer was unworthy of being received. That I didn't have the knowledge, the skill, the talent, the time, the funds, the support, the happy childhood, the unhappy childhood, the right body, the right sound, the right "way of being"... The self-doubt I had was endless.

But I did have a shed. Darby saying "Go, baby, go." And a song that was holding a mirror up to my life and demanding an answer to an important question.

So I called one of the best songwriters I knew in LA, Kevin Fisher, and he invited me to join his weekly songwriting group.

I spent the rest of 2018 writing songs. 2019 learning how to raise the funds to record, and then learning more and recording.

2020's learning has been about how to be the best advocate I can be for these songs. I've been building the house and living in it at the same time. 2020 has been about designing the packaging, shooting videos, interviewing with press, promoting the singles, and, most importantly, offering through my email list and live performances my best efforts to bring that connection to others through song and story that Someone Else's Dream called me to do.

My heart is overflowing with humble pride at this offering. I have had so many people support the making of this project, which turned into an album and a companion book.

My sweetheart and bad*ss bassman Darby Orr has cheered me on every tiny step. I could gush forever about this, and poor Darby is the one who will have to listen to it. But I can't imagine a more supportive and loving partner.

Many past experiences helped build the confidence and skills that I needed to do this, and I am grateful to my mentors at AULA for being an essential piece of my growth as a writer and editor -- particularly Steve Heller, Bernadette Murphy, Hope Edelman, Dan Bellm, Peter Andrew Selgin, Peter Nichols, and Brad Kessler.

And very grateful to Shane Alexander, who worked side by side with me for 6 months as producer. Michael Gehring, who was right there, too, engineering and running Secret World Studios and staying late to talk shop. The rest of the magnificent top-notch band: Darby Orr, Carl Byron, Denny Weston Jr., Jesse Grey Siebenberg, Mike Mullins. Brian Yaskulka who is a complete artist at mixing and Hans DeKline who brought this to final polish with his beautiful mastering. Cover and press photographer Anabel DFlux, and Danit Sigler who helped with the photo editing to get get it exactly how I envisioned it. Max Forward, who has generously allowed me to use a brilliant sketch he made of me one drunken post-taco night. Kevin Rhoades who directed the official music videos for Headlights and What Really Matters. And giant thanks to Amanda Blide, Hunter, and Michelle at TREND - PR, Branding & Social Media.

Thank you to the literary magazines who first published some of the essays in the companion book: The Poet's Billow, Jet Fuel Review, and Under the Gum Tree.

And -- most gratefully -- this album and companion book was made because of the incredible support of an amazing community of family, friends, fans, and strangers who were inspired by the story of a woman waking up from a dream. There are so many people I am thinking about right now, and it feels weird to name some and not others. I mean - Yoga Blend, Rising Lotus Yoga, and The International Women's Writing Guild - IWWG - you have blown me away with your support. I have thanked every person by name in the liner notes of the album and book. Typing your names reminded me of the potency of the answer you gave to my question "Can I do this?"

It was a giant, resounding YES.

I hope this album touches your heart.

The Art of Slowing Down-Last Call for Early Birds. As the days grow shorter and the nights grow longer, our bodies naturally want to slow down. Join us for this special community event. Open to all.

During the week of October 24-November 2, we will be celebrating Dia De Los Muertos...Day of the Dead. There will be an altar, or Ofrenda, set up in the Ganesh room all week and you are welcome to leave notes, pictures or little mementos in remembrance of those who have passed. We will come together for some meditation, storytelling (if you are so moved), remembrances, and a little treat, the traditional pan de mu**to that is eaten on this date. It is our vision that the celebration around this holiday will spark imagination and memory, allowing all of us in the Rising Lotus community to focus gently on our ancestors and all those we have loved and who have died.

🌬You’ve seen the memes: Mercury’s backward tour through the sky becomes a convenient scapegoat whenever a flight is delayed, laptop glitchy, or email goes astray. But the actual meaning of Mercury in retrograde (MIR) isn’t just some run of bad luck. It’s astrology’s way of forcing us to review, recheck and revisit.

How can you get MIR to work for you instead of against you? ☄️

First, take a deep breath. Despite the serious frustration and even terror that comes with a MIR cycle, it’s not the end of the world.

While it may be an inconvenience to deal with it for close to three months every year, it’s not unmanageable.

You can sign contracts, make major financial decisions, or start a new job in this time period, but you should be careful. During this period, cross your t’s and dot your i’s – and double check everything. Remember to BREATH . Take some time for yourself . DONT TAKE YOURSELF SO SERIOUSLY ✨Trust the FLOW✨

Join us in class to get into your body and out of your head , only 9 days left of MIR, You got this 🙏🏼
