The Battle of Pharsalus: Caesar vs. Pompey
From Commentarii de Bello Civili by Gaius Julius Caesar
(Book III, sections 88–96, 98–99, 104; translated by M. M. Pokrovsky)

As Caesar approached Pompey’s camp, he observed that his line of battle had been drawn up in the following manner. On the left wing were two legions which Caesar had previously handed over at the beginning of their alliance, in accordance with the terms of their agreement; of these, one was called the First, the other the Third. Pompey himself commanded this position.
The center was held by Scipio with the Syrian legions. The Cilician legion, together with the Spanish cohorts—which had been brought over by Afranius—was placed on the right wing. Pompey considered these troops the most reliable in his entire army.
The rest of his forces he stationed between the center and the wings, arranging them in such a way as to strengthen the line. Altogether, there were about 45,000 men, not including additional auxiliary troops.
