Narbonne Swim Team 2011: "No Excuses. Just Swim." Narbonne High School has always had a swim team since 1925; however, Narbonne has not always had a swim team constant from year to year.
Mrs. Chagnovich and her daughter coached the team in the late 1970s and early 1980s and the team's home was Banning High School's City pool. After a hiatus, Erik Nielson, a social science teacher re-awakened the swim team in 1999 and the team anchored at Victoria Park Pool for the next decade plus. He was later joined by his assistant, Maria Zarro, in 2000, who, in 2004 took leadership as head coach with assistant coach, Pat Bender. Together, Coaches Zarro and Bender led the team to at least five Marine League Championships with both varsity and frosh/soph teams and continued to call Victoria Park Pool home for the team. This year, 2012, with Coaches Bender and Zarro in the Athletics' Office, Coach Nielson returns to head coaching with a new home pool, Scott Park Pool.

Last night as I was driving down Western Ave on my way home from work, I passed by a horrific accident involving a motorcycle and a car. By the looks of the accident, nobody survived. The motorcycle was twisted and the car was bashed in from one driver's side to the passenger's side. I made the sign of the cross, as I often do when I pass these types of scenes, praying for the victims of this crash. I learned this morning that the motorcyclist passed. The rider was Uli Gutierrez, one of my very own swim team alumni. Our swim team alumni are in shock and such sorry for this loss of our family.
R.I.P. Uli. You are loved by all. May you rest in peace and swim forever in warm waters.
