The Eagles trace their origins to early 1971, when Linda Ronstadt and her manager John Boylan recruited Glenn Frey and Don Henley for her backing band. Henley had recently moved to Los Angeles from Texas with his group Shiloh, while Frey came from Michigan and had formed Longbranch Pennywhistle. The two met in 1970 at The Troubadour and connected through their shared label, Amos Records.

They were later joined by Randy Meisner—who had been playing with Ricky Nelson’s backing group, the Stone Canyon Band—and Bernie Leadon, formerly of the Flying Burrito Brothers. All four joined Ronstadt’s touring band for her Silk Purse tour in the summer of 1971.

During that tour, Frey and Henley decided to form their own band and informed Ronstadt of their plans. Frey later credited Ronstadt with suggesting Leadon and helping bring him into the fold. They also approached Meisner, completing the core lineup. Although the four only performed live together behind Ronstadt once—at a July concert in Disneyland—they all appeared on her self-titled album.

In September 1971, the group was signed to Asylum Records, founded by David Geffen, who had been introduced to Frey by Jackson Browne. Geffen bought out Frey and Henley’s existing contracts and sent the band to Aspen to develop their sound.

Before settling on a name, they performed their first show in October 1971 under the name “Teen King and the Emergencies” at The Gallery club in Aspen.

The name “Eagles” reportedly came during a pe**te- and tequila-fueled outing in the Mojave Desert. Accounts differ: Don Felder later credited Leadon with the idea after recalling Native American reverence for eagles, while J. D. Souther claimed it was Frey who shouted “Eagles!” after spotting them flying overhead. Meanwhile, comedian Steve Martin—a friend of the band—once suggested calling them “the Eagles”, though Frey insisted the name would simply be Eagles.
