Los Angeles Lakers

[03/28/13]   Kobe Bryant has beaten the Minnesota Timberwolves 22 straight times, and he may have gotten away with one in his latest victory.

[03/28/13]   Dwight Howard had 25 points, 16 rebounds, five blocks and five steals, and Pau Gasol added 17 points and nine rebounds for the Lakers, who had lost three in a row and were playing their first game without their defensive stopper. World Peace will have surgery on a torn meniscus on Thursday, leaving the Lakers to chase the playoffs without him.

[08/14/12]   New NBA trade rumors claim that an LA Lakers trade with the Minnesota Timberwolves was discussed that could have sent over Andrew Bynum. According to CBS Sports, Minnesota rejected the offer, though there isn't any specific knowledge about what the two teams were going to exchange in the deal.

If it turns out that the Wolves could have had Bynum while also retaining Ricky Rubio and Kevin Love, fans might get a little frustrated that the deal wasn't completed. On the other hand, it's also possible that the Lakers wanted both Love and Rubio in any deal that would have netted the Wolves Bynum. In that instance, turning down Los Angeles was a good move.

As this rumor about a possible Lakers-Wolves trade starts to get fleshed out, someone will figure out what the offer really was. This isn't the first rumor that linked the two teams either, because prior discussions involved both Paul Gasol and Derrick Williams changing teams as part of a bigger Dwight Howard trade with the Orlando Magic.

Bynum certainly could have been interesting in Minnesota, especially if it really allowed Love to take advantage of his ever-increasing shooting range on the floor. Either way, the Wolves didn't close the deal and now they are going to try to improve during the 2012-13 NBA season through youth. It could take a lot of work to catch up to the Oklahoma City Thunder in the Western Conference though.

[08/14/12]   There is a good chance that Howard will not be ready to start the Lakers' regular-season opener, but luckily this is a script the team is familiar with—only the actors have changed.

The short 2011-12 season was the first that former Lakers center Andrew Bynum began a campaign fully healthy in at least two years, but his previous absences were softened by the presence of fellow seven-footer Pau Gasol.

Gasol's ability to play in the middle helped the Lakers weather the storm from Bynum's various leg injuries, but next season there will be no Lamar Odom to step up and man Gasol's place in the paint.

[01/11/12]   Long-time Pacific Division rivals renew their hostilities in Staples Center Tuesday when the weary Los Angeles Lakers play host to the Phoenix Suns.

No NBA team has played more in the season's first two weeks than the Lakers, who have used a home-heavy early season schedule to claim its usual spot at the top of the division standings.

But, with Phil Jackson retired and Lamar Odom in Dallas things have been tougher than ever. LA is 6-1 at home on the campaign but still searching for its first road win (0-3) and at 6-4 overall is deadlocked with the Clippers atop the Pacific, although the 4-2 Clips have the superior winning percentage. Phoenix, at 4-4, is a game back of both clubs.

The Lakers improved to 2-0 on a three-game homestand on Sunday with a 90-82 win over Memphis. Kobe Bryant scored 26 points and dished out nine assists in that one.

Despite turning over the ball 27 times, the Lakers took advantage of the Zach Randolph-less Memphis squad by dominating the glass, outrebounding the Grizzlies 53-34.

Andrew Bynum and Pau Gasol controlled the interior, snatching 15 rebounds apiece for the Lakers, who won their sixth straight game at Staples Center since dropping their home opener to the Bulls, 88-87. Matt Barnes added 15 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks.

"Twenty-seven turnovers was the downside. We have to address that," Gasol said.

[01/17/11]   "This is the problem our Lakers are having. We're facing opponents who are hungry and play every second of the game, no matter if they are winning or losing. And then we have Lamar's attitude, which is whining because an opponent is playing hard, That's crazy. Instead of doing something stupid like grab a guy's jersey and throwing him out of bounds.

[11/28/10]   First things first: The Pacers were supposed to be pretty bad, but aren't cooperating with preseason predictions. They'll enter Sunday's game at Staples with a ho-hum but very deceptive 7-7 record. Indiana has five wins in its last nine games, but those losses aren't exactly steeped in shame: by three in Houston, four in Orlando, four in an overtime loss to the Thunder in Oklahoma City, to name a few.

[09/28/10]   The Lakers are the reigning NBA champions after defeating the Boston Celtics in the Finals four games to three, capturing the franchise's 16th NBA championship on the 50th anniversary of its relocation to Los Angeles. As of 2009, the Lakers are the most valuable NBA franchise.[2] In June 2010, basketball analyst and writer John Hollinger ranked the Lakers as the greatest NBA franchise of all time.

[08/19/10]   It's long been thought of as a possibility, but as NBA.com's Scott Howard-Cooper recently reported, the idea that Magic Johnson could be a majority owner of an NBA franchise is now being discussed in the open.
"I'll still be a Laker forever," Johnson recently told Howard-Cooper, who subsequently reported that the NBA icon is in talks about owning the Detroit Pistons.

[07/06/10]   After meeting with Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak and coach Phil Jackson for an exit interview last Thursday, he flew to Las Vegas for three days of meetings with the NBA Players Association meetings, helping the union draft a new collective bargaining proposal.
He granted this interview before all of that, so I had no idea how much energy he'd have left when we finally met at a corner table of this lounge

Los Angeles Lakers - The Final

Even though he's played 11 seasons as a Laker point guard, Fisher ranks only 12th in total assists. Even Michael Cooper, whose numbers are most comparable on the lower end, has the additional cache as an excellent defender -- he was the NBA's Defensive Player of the Year in 1986-87.
Of course, with all the intangibles and clutch shots, the key statistic for Derek Fisher is his five championships. Only five L.A. Lakers own that many rings; no one has won more of them as a Laker.

[06/17/10]   The Boston Celtics, as any Lakers fan has undoubtedly noticed in the course of what has been one of the most satisfying NBA Finals in recent memory, have temper-control issues. A team featuring forward/center Rasheed Wallace, who holds the dubious NBA record for most technical fouls, and center Kendrick Perkins, who like Wallace has played in danger of suspension if he commits a seventh technical in the playoffs.

[06/17/10]   If the Lakers beat their hated rivals Thursday at Staples Center, Kobe Bryant collects a fifth championship ring, tying Magic Johnson and moving within one of Michael Jordan.
If Bryant can push them to one more victory, their 73rd and most important of the season, they'll earn a 16th championship trophy, one fewer than Boston, and take some sting out of their painful Finals loss two years ago to the

[06/15/10]   Jackson is the league's highest-paid coach with an annual salary of $12 million. Earlier in the playoffs, Jackson publicly acknowledged that Lakers owner Jerry Buss wants him to take an unspecified pay cut to stay on L.A.'s bench next season, but he also said in the same interview before Game 2 of the Western Conference finals against Phoenix that the probabilities are great that he and Buss will hash out a new deal.

[06/13/10]   --The Times' Mike Bresnahan wonders how Lakers center Andrew Bynum will look in Game 5 Sunday night against Boston.
--The Times' Broderick Turner notes Lamar Odom's serious demeanor during Saturday's media session.
--The Times' Bill Plaschke wants more from Kobe Bryant.
--The Times' Mark Heisler compares this series to the 1984 and 1985 NBA Finals.

[05/31/10]   The two heavyweight teams, who have a combined 32 NBA titles, will play a mouth-watering, best-of-seven championship series for a 12th time with Game One set for Thursday at Staples Center in downtown Los Angeles.
The Lakers have come a long way since their humiliation in 2008 when they were mauled 131-92 by the Celtics in the decisive Game Six at Boston Garden.

[05/29/10]   The first phone call Ron Artest received from the Lakers the day after his already legendary shot went something like this: "Where are you?"
The latest member of Lakers playoff lore didn't think there was practice Friday morning, so he went directly to LAX for the team's flight to Phoenix.
One problem: There was indeed practice at the team's training facility in El Segundo. The plane didn't leave until 3 p.m.

[05/24/10]   86-84 Suns at the end of the third. Amare is dominating with 29 points.

[05/22/10]   It didn't take long for Los Angeles Lakers fans to start anticipating a rematch of the 2008 NBA Finals. A "We want Boston! We want Boston!" chant echoed throughout Staples Center late in the Lakers 128-107 Game 1 win over Phoenix, a day after the Celtics beat the Orlando Magic to go up 1-0 in the East finals.
"I have zero reaction to that," Kobe Bryant said Monday when asked about the chant.

[05/18/10]   On Monday, in the Lakers' 128-107 win over the Phoenix Suns, Bryant had 40 points, including a remarkable 21 points in the third quarter of the Western Conference finals opener. Game 2 in the best-of-seven series is Wednesday at Staples Center.
It really wasn't much of a game once Bryant took over. It was the fifth consecutive game in which Bryant has scored more than 30 points.

[05/18/10]   If a report earlier in the day about Kobe Bryant’s knee being drained recently turned out to be off target, nothing else about the Lakers’ star was on Monday night when Los Angeles opened the Western Conference finals with a 128-107 thrashing of the Phoenix Suns.

[05/14/10]   The Lakers' franchise was founded in 1946 in Detroit, Michigan before moving to Minneapolis, where the team got its official title from the state's nickname, "Land of 10,000 Lakes."[3] The Lakers won five championships before relocating to Los Angeles in the 1960–61 season. The Lakers lost all of their eight appearances in the NBA Finals in the 1960s, despite having help from Elgin Baylor and Jerry West.

[05/14/10]   The NBA Draft Lottery will take place on Tuesday, May 18 at 4:30PM on ESPN.
If both Conference Finals series end in 5 games or less, the NBA Finals will move up and will begin on Tuesday, June 1. Otherwise, the NBA Finals will begin on Thursday, June 3.

[05/11/10]   Pau Gasol and Kobe Bryant combined for 65 points.Gasol scored 33 points (a new season high) on 12-18 shooting, going 9-11 from the line, grabbed 14 rebounds and had 2 blocks.Kobe scored 32 points on 11-23 shooting, went 10-12 from the line, and added 4 assists.

[05/10/10]   For the Jazz, Game 4 of their second-round playoff series against Los Angeles on Monday night is win or go home. For the Lakers, it's win, go home and get some rest before starting the Western Conference finals against Phoenix. The Jazz have never been swept in a seven-game playoff series in franchise history.

Lakers Coach Phil Jackson on Game 3 against Utah Jazz

This time the Utah Jazz are battling at home. The Los Angeles Lakers lead the series 2-0 after winning two of their games at home, although those are not easy wins the Lakers will try to close the series at Utah home.
The Utah Jazz are playing well on the Lakers home, almost snatching game 2 against the Lakers. Now that they are playing at home, they play better and they very confident that they can take game 3 against the formidable Lakers team.

Lakers forward Ron Artest on Utah Jazz

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. -- Kobe Bryant was honored, Ron Artest was snubbed, but the fact two Lakers were thought worthy of inclusion on the NBA All-Defensive team only goes to show why Los Angeles has held opponents to 39.9 percent shooting from the field during the playoffs, the No. 1 mark in the league.
Bryant was announced to the first team Wednesday, amassing 13 first-team votes and eight second-team votes from a panel consisting of the NBA's 30 head coaches, earning his fifth-straight first-team appearance.
