The Tai Chi Dude
Hi! I enjoy teaching Martial Arts, especially Kung Fu and Tai Chi, and general self defense
WARNING ***Graphic Content**
I normally don't post videos like this, but I thought it was of importance since I have seen an increase in incidence recently. One of the contestants has a severe bone break. I'm not here to speculate on the cause and I wish him a speedy and thorough recover.
I'd rather emphasize on the fact that training martial arts is about training out bodies to be the strongest and healthiest, not just inflict the most damage or create maximal destruction.
With training and competition comes risks, safety and protection should always be top of mind. Self-Defense, Self-Care, and Self-Improvement for the betterment of everyone.
😅 Don't discount humility my friends.. keep training.
Parry and Punch...
Can Tai Chi be used for self defense and is it practical?
Yes and Yes.
This movement is a good example as the path is cleared for you to deliver the strike against an attacker.
The attack is parried and then the strike delivered using basic tai chi principles, such as relaxation, shifting the weight, and using the body.
Once you understand that the body delivered the strike, not the hand, is when you really begin to put the principles into real life practice use.

Initially, Ken Lo wasn’t the main villain in DRUNKEN MASTER 2 aka LEGEND OF THE DRUNKEN MASTER. He played a henchman, and also the body double to the main villain.
At Golden Harvest studios, waiting for Big Brother Jackie to get ready on set, Ken would be stretching with his foot up high on the side of the staircase. For 30 minutes at a time. It wasn’t difficult at all since I was used to it.
One day, after dinner, Jackie said, how about this, Ken, you be the main villain. I’ll give you an opportunity. In 2 weeks, put your leg up high without any support. No way, Big Brother… You do it or not?
Of course I’ll do it, said Ken.
Ken went back and trained his ass off. Real tears, he said.
** There are people and some media that badmouth Jackie saying he doesn’t treat his Stunt Team with respect nor give them any opportunities to succeed as a star. Ken Lo is definitely Jackie’s greatest disciple! 👏🔥
How Tai Chi principles, specifically recentering the mind to the lower Dan Tian, can be applied to daily life to manage distractions and improve focus.

The one-inch punch isn't about the inch, but rather it's about what happens when your whole body, breath, and intent line up in a single moment. It utilizes principles rooted in Tai Chi and Traditional Chinese Medicine, along with principles of gravity.
With practice, students can develop a powerful short distance strike.

Snake Creeps Down to Rooster Stance is a tai chi move with many implications, and probably one of the moves requiring the most flexibility with the practitioner going into a pubu stance which is a very popular stance with Chinese Martial Arts. For self defense and practical use the stretch is less intense and may now be performed so low. So cross training in various styles would actually be beneficial, not necessary, but again beneficial to help you develop a more well rounded training regimen and mind set.
Also the meaning behind the movement gives way to us understanding that retreating, taking a step back, to comeback and fight another day is not showing fear, but rather recuperation leads to strength.
