Q: “How do we begin do decolonize our pantries, and what role can chefs play at every level in this work? This is of course nothing new, but the health and wellness movement especially has a major problem with co-opting and appropriating traditional and cultural foods.”

A, courtesy @kayla_s_stewart: “I would first suggest to really consider the ways in which you think about food, the ways in which you associate cuisines with health, or don't associate certain cuisines with health, and wellness, for that matter. Understanding where certain ingredients come from, who brought those ingredients and how those ingredients arrived, to the American, to the Western palate. Recognizing the often painful and problematic history that's associated with the travel of said produce – starting there is just a way to change your own thinking, your own narrative of what food is and how good food arrives to our plates.”

This stuck with me because it took me some time for me to unravel that. What do you mean that all these crappy things happening to me are actually coming from meee?!

We have the power and agency to shift our internal state of being. How we feel, think, and act, comes from us and no one else. Of course, we are influenced by our experiences, but ultimately, we decide (not with a snap of the fingers) how we choose to live and experience life.
~~~
When you start making those positive changes inside of you, you'll notice that things on the outside get a little easier, too. You'll get less irritated with people, less annoyed, and less judgmental. And as compassion for yourself increases, so will your compassion for others. And sometimes you may even feel joy for no apparent reason at all. That's one of my personal favorites.
~~~
This is a motivator to do the inside work, my loves.

Discomfort will set in as you begin to make changes on the inside. You're going against the grain that you've grown accustomed to for so long. This is a good thing.

To get rid of the rubbish in our minds and bodies takes "Tapas" - one of the personal practices (Niyamas) in the Eight Limbs of Yoga. You know how most everyone hates change?...that friction of breaking old habits and creating new ones? That is the discomfort I'm talking about.
~~~
Tapas stokes that fire within us that is necessary in order for transformation to take place. It burns away the old, stagnant ways that keep us in suffering, and it makes clearance for new growth to sprout.
~~~
So when you feel like giving up, just know that the discomfort is a good sign that transformation is happpennniiiing.

A sense of disembodiment is very common for trauma survivors and even the general population. We get stuck in the stories cycling in our mind day in and day out that we can forget how to feel. Stay curious and allow yourself to feel, folx. No need to judge it or even apologize for what you feel.

Let's practice it: Pause here for a moment and feel your feet connect to the earth. Feel all ten toes. Wiggle your toes if that helps to feel. Be proud of yourself, you've just begun the process of re-embodiment.

Oof.. this one hits home for me. I've been working on boundaries this year (and last year, and the year before last...) Specifically, drawing boundaries and keeping them. Sometimes they blur when I'm being too "nicey nice", and then I have to snap myself out of it.

But there comes a point (for me, it comes with age) where you just say F it I don't have time for this sh!t.
~~~
Speak your truth when you need to. It's ok to say, "I love you, but please stop doing xyz." Ok, so, true story here, a few months ago, I kept flaking on a friend. I wasn't putting our planned phone dates in my calendar so I kept forgetting about them. After the third time she told me, "Hey, every time you flake on me, it makes me feel like you don't value my friendship." And boy did that sting a little! But, she was so right. I totally was making her feel like her friendship didn't matter to me, even though it absolutely did.

I loved that she felt safe enough with me to tell me that. I loved that she drew a boundary and kept it. I loved that she spoke her truth to me with sincerity. And, by her modeling all of that it actually helped me to start doing the same for myself.

How can one reckon this when we live in a world where black and brown people do not feel safe? The feeling of safety is a fundamental human need, and one that is necessary in order for human beings to connect with one another.

When you embody a felt sense of safety, your nervous system feels this at a subconscious level (neuroception). You're better able to connect with yourself, with others, and with the world.
~~~
For those with a felt sense of living in an unsafe world, can you think of a moment in your life when you felt safe? Or, is there someone in your life that you feel safe with? Maybe it's a place. Is there somewhere you've been where you felt completely safe, at ease, and unguarded? Bring those memories in, see them in your minds eye.

Sometimes we need to bring our own light into the darkness.
