Marlborough School is an independent, urban day school serving a diverse group of young women. The Mustangs compete on 36 teams in 12 different sports.

MARLBOROUGH ATHLETIC PHILOSOPHY Over the last twenty-five years, there have been progressively more opportunities available for female athletes in elementary and secondary schools, colleges, and, most recently, at the professional level. The Athletic Department at Marlborough School strives to help our student-athletes optimize these opportunities and prepare them to successfully engage in interscholastic competition. The Athletic Department provides a high quality and competitive program, emphasizing both skill and character development. While providing an environment suitable for our most advanced athletes, the Athletic Department attempts to be inclusive where possible without jeopardizing the competitive level of the teams. The Athletic Department philosophy compliments the Mission of the School in providing our students with excellent preparation and assistance in the college admissions process. A Marlborough athlete will learn the importance of dedication and commitment to her teammates and will develop self-confidence, leadership skills, self-discipline, and good sportsmanship. Maximum effort is the signature of a Marlborough athlete, a young woman who conducts herself with a sense of pride and self-esteem both in and out of competition.

🗣 ATTN STUDENT-ATHLETES: Our final Athlete of Distinction post goes to Lindsay Louie ‘07, who shares a powerful message about resilience, grit and mental toughness.

She states, “Playing at Marlborough facilitated the development of invaluable characteristics of grit, resilience and mental toughness that I've carried with me throughout my career. Working in private equity is tough. Early in my career as a baby analyst I was working long days in high pressure environments. But I had physical and mental experience doing that kind of work because in high school I was conquering 6AM J Period, a day's worth of class, 2 hours of additional practice, and AP/Honors homework on the regular. Also, through my involvement on various athletic teams at Marlborough, I've created lasting relationships with incredibly intelligent, charismatic women who continue to push me to be better. Having this network of women who are so supportive has really encouraged me to grow and take initiative in my professional life.”

🗣ATTN STUDENT-ATHLETES: This week’s AOD is Alycia Riccobono ‘94, a former 3 sport (Soccer, Track & Field, Volleyball) student-athlete during her time at Marlborough.

Alycia knows a thing or two about the importance of working hard & has the results to prove it, as the anchor leg of the CIF winning 4x100m relay team! But as we all know, nothing great is accomplished alone & her fondest memories are the camaraderie of being on a team.

She states, “work hard, stay focused, never do anything halfway, and enjoy your time with your team, it goes by really fast!”

Coach Brent comes to us with an extensive coaching background, with stops at both the collegiate level (Tulane University, Southeastern Louisiana University, Nicholls State University) and high school level (Mesa Verde, Granada Hills Charter).

🗣ATTN STUDENT-ATHLETES: It’s no surprise that recent graduate Jordan Phillips ‘18 continues to excel at the next level. Her drive & determination, both in the classroom and in the pool, have been the foundation for her success.

Jordan states, “being involved in athletics during college has given me a sense of community... the sacrifices you make and the time you spend with your sport will give you the confidence, drive and determination to accomplish anything.”

It’s no secret sport provides community and a support system when you need it the most. Cherish & make time for the relationships with your teammates & coaches - looking back, those will be some of the fondest memories of your career.

For Jordan, her greatest achievement as a Marlborough student-athlete was the culmination of 4 years of hard work, when her TEAM became CIF-SS champions.

🗣ATTN STUDENT-ATHLETES: An accomplished student-athlete during her time at Marlborough, Katharine (Laquer) Rider ‘97 is the first to admit the skills she learned & the experiences she had during her time participating on the Cross Country and Track & Field teams have defined her life. She states, “the miles that nobody saw were the hardest to do, but those solitary miles ultimately made the difference in my training and my life.”

Katharine goes on to say, “Friendly competition drove me to put in the extra work, and that hard work opened doors in college, sports and beyond.”

Coach Johnson comes to us having previous coaching stops at Alemany & with the Cal Storm organization. Coach Johnson also brings to Marlborough an extensive background as a trainer, having worked with many elite players throughout his coaching career. We're excited to have Coach Johnson lead this program and can't wait for him to take the court with this committed & hard working group of players.

🗣ATTN STUDENT-ATHLETES: Check out the wise words from 2007 graduate & Olympian Kate Grace. As a three sport athlete during her Marlborough days (Cross Country, Soccer, Track & Field), Kate learned a thing or two about hard work, resilience & grit.

As a professional runner, she has experienced first hand the same types of challenges that you are all dealing with as well. She states, “conditions do not have to be perfect to perform well.” So much can be overcome & accomplished in challenging times, it’s about keeping a positive mindset & calling upon those skills, not only in athletics but throughout your daily lives. #mustangpride #athletesofdistinction

🗣ATTN STUDENT-ATHLETES: We know times are tough right now & the impact of sports seasons being pushed back has been difficult, but we have no doubt your determination & resiliency will help you through the toughest times!

We’re excited to share some advice & words of encouragement from some of our Marlborough ATHLETES OF DISTINCTION. We hope this gives you the spark you need to continue pursuing your path to greatness, just as these alumnae have.

Kristen (Hunt-Greco) Azevedo ‘98 is a former Marlborough Volleyball player who still relies upon the lessons that she learned from athletics throughout her daily life.

Kristen states, “Before I had a clue of who I wanted to be in this world, I was passionate about being an athlete at Marlborough. That experience became the foundation from which I garnered strength & character for the rest of my life.”

Athletics helped ground her in a new life at college & helped open up doors by allowing her to travel the world while competing. There’s no doubt the skills she learned has helped her to excel in her current role as a Music Attorney at Netflix.
