SCOPE at UCLA

SCOPE empowers the greater Los Angeles community through meaningful service that minimizes disparities in education and healthcare.

SCOPE is a student volunteer organization based out of the University of California, Los Angeles. Through the collective efforts of students volunteers, SCOPE aims to be civically engaged with Los Angeles as it works to minimize disparities in education and healthcare. SCOPE consists of four volunteer programs:

1 - Fitness and Nutrition (FitNut)

FitNut volunteers teach fitness and nutrition clas

ses at five underprivileged elementary schools in Santa Monica. We focus our lessons on a wide range of accessible and important topics, from eating fruits and vegetables, to heart and dental health, to bullying and mental health. Each year we host an Olympics Day, where we bring all 350 to 400 of our students to UCLA to play sports and encourage them to go to college.

2 - Youth Empowerment Program (YEP)

Our goal in the Youth Empowerment Program (YEP) is to better the community of the greater Los Angeles area by improving the lives of children through personal relationships with UCLA mentors. We provide elementary school students with a consistent role model to facilitate educational success and improve self-esteem and future aspirations.

3 - Hablamos Juntos (HJ)

Hablamos Juntos is a class for parents of children with speech delays. A UCLA team of doctors and students has worked to bring this free program to parents who want to improve their children’s speech and encourage language development. In 6 group sessions taught in Spanish, parents will learn to identify a child’s speech level and how to help their children develop their speech.

4 - Patient Health Advocates (PHA)

Patient health advocates work in conjunction with residents at the UCLA Medical Plaza and the UCLA Med-Peds Comprehensive Care Center (MPCCC) to connect patients of all income levels, ethnicities, ages, etc. to resources in their communities that will improve their lives. Volunteers accompany residents into examination rooms and discuss resources with patients that will best fit their needs and later connect patients with applicable resources via telephone, email, or mail. The work of patient health advocates focuses on improving the lives of patients outside of a medical facility.

YEP Field Trip!

For the first event of the year the Youth Empowerment Program at UCLA took their mentees to the California Science Center in Los Angeles. It was a great day for both mentors and mentees as they got to see the Expedition space shuttle and experience an IMAX showing of the national parks. The volunteers in this program work with elementary kids from third through fifth grade so this trip allowed them to spend a fun afternoon with their mentees showing them all the cool things the Science Center has to offer. This was also the first opportunity for new mentors to spend time with their mentees and begin to get to know each other. In the words of Jacquie Williams, a returning mentor and coordinator for the program, “My favorite part of the field trip was seeing all the new volunteers open up. I’ve only seen them in a classroom setting, but as soon as the kids got there I could really see how excited they were to get to know their mentees as well as the other kids in the program.” Looking at exhibits and walking around the Center was a great way for both mentors and mentees to spend quality time together. Since the mentorship program takes place on campus where the kids attend school it was a pleasant change of pace to be able to take them on a field trip, which the kids were excited for as well. All in all, it was a great day for both mentors and mentees alike!
