Keep your arm loose and whippy so you can pull the arm through to release using your hips, core, and shoulders from the ground up.

Strength builds stability and proprioception which are critical to delivering a high-quality Knuckleball.

You have to fall down the slope while rotating before stabilizing into a balanced release point.

That takes strength which is part of the modern pitching equation, so grab a barbell.

Lift heavy. Chuck nastier knucks. Simple.

Knuck's not random!

You not only have to reduce the spin to under 3/4 of a rotation to throw a pro quality knuckleball in the 60 MPH range, but you have to control what little spin is left on the ball forward like a 12-6 curveball to control the zone.

You can get away with a little more rotation once you get up into the 70's (and exponentially more rotation into the 80's but it then turns more into a forkball), but you still have to corral the rotation to throw strikes.

It's one of the most intimidating pieces of information Charlie Hough hit me with early in my pro career, and it makes Knuckleballing that much more difficult.

But there are ways to control it. Follow to learn how.

Knuckleballs get easier to throw for strikes when you throw them harder (in the 70 MPH range) because the ball has less time to move off the target.

The movement compacts into a smaller box but becomes incredibly erratic, and the spin demands lower a little bit.

Knuckleballs in the 50's need to be damn near perfect with no spin.

Knucks in the 60's need to be almost perfect with less than 3/4 rotation forward to compete at a high level.

But a 70+ MPH knuckleball demands less -- you can get away with a spin-and-a-half and low-spin knuckleballs will still miss barrels if they roll backwards or sideways.

Then 3 spins will do it in the 80 MPH range to act like a Roy Face forkball.

So throw it hard. The knuckleball is not slow because of the effort. It's slow because the lack of leverage and the power drain that takes place from the act of killing the spin on your fingertips.

New knuckleballers tend to pull down on the ball at release instead of extending through the top of the ball to send it rolling forward.

And 25-year MLB legend Charlie Hough schools fresh-arm Adrian Gamez on the difference during my 2026 Charlie Hough Clinic in Los Angeles.

Adrian tends to lean towards the target and has a loose arm which he uses for an over-the-top delivery. This will eventually make it a bit easier to throw strikes, but using the torso to lean at the target is forcing him to pull down on the ball.

Stay tall, make sure the ball beats your chest to the plate and don't release until you can see the ball in your peripheral vision.

The camera rarely captures the twists-and-turns of the knuckleball accurately, but the tracers at least give you an idea of what the catcher's dealing with.

The Knuckleball seems to shimmer before becoming invisible when thrown well but it depends on velocity.

You need to throw it 67+ mph for the truly terrifying movement to occur. Anything slower and the ball just lazily bops around.

It's a cool party trick but won't get outs consistently.

The knuckleball really becomes viscous in the 70's but it's almost impossible to square up the spin as you approach 80 mph.

At that point, it becomes a "forkle-ball"

These are some of the knucks I captured.

Corkscrews are nasty BUT...

They are a sign that your hand is not in the correct position to consistently release a no-spin Knuckleball.

If you see a corkscrew, then externally let everyone be impressed by the pitch while you internally realize that you need to adjust to get back on track.

Because you're really close to the terrible backwards-spin release point.

Corkscrews are the canary in a coal mine.

Kevin Hill goes to Pro No Spin Zone

Here's how you can do it, too:

1 Tag me in a video of you chucking a knuck
2 Competitive pitch from a regulation mound for your age
3 Spin must be clearly visible, no tracker data!
4 Less than 1/3 of a rotation forward!
5 (OPTIONAL) Prove 67+ mph to achieve "pro" status

Win and you'll be plastered all over Knuck Nation social media plus you'll get a free T-shirt shirt!

I'll use the highest quality videos and may take it to the Nation for a vote if spin is questionable.

Good luck.
