This is the one habit that changed my home more than anything else.

It takes the same amount of time to put something away as it does to drop it in the wrong spot.

But one seemingly small neglected action turns into a pile. And then another. And suddenly your counters are covered.

These tiny decisions either keep your space calm or slowly chip away at it.

What do you do with your keys, glasses and the mail? I love the idea of a tray or basket for those every day things. Or a hook for the purse.

What's your biggest clutter magnet? the kitchen counter, dining table, or bedroom chair?

If you're ready to finally tackle the clutter, comment CALM and I'll send you my free Decluttering JumpStart.

I didn’t believe this would work either. No way, I thought.

I actually used to laugh at small habit changes and simple routines.

They felt too small to matter.

But after years of organizing homes, I keep seeing the same thing.

Homes usually don’t get cluttered overnight.

They get cluttered through tiny things repeated every day. They add up quickly.

And calm works the same way.

A few simple habits I swear by now are these:

Make the bed every morning. This small action helps me get sorted in the morning.

Put shoes away when you come home. Out of the way, out of sight.

Donate something when you bring something new in. It works really well.

Go through mail as it comes in. Chuck the junk mail straight into the recycling bin before walking into the house.

Don’t walk empty-handed into another room. My mom always told me this, but I never understood how much of an impact it really has.

Do a 5-minute reset at night. It’s a simple habit to end the day with a calmer home.

I swear, this is how clutter stops piling up.

Almost too simple, right?
